Of course not!   Only if you leave them damp for too long will they go mouldy/develop a permanent bad odour/mildew.   They might not be as well sanitised if you use low temperatures - I've found towels washed in warm water don't stay fresh as long. It doesn't mean they develop permanent mould!

Having seen one of these working properly, I can attest to the speed control being pretty woozy at the best of times, so it would be normal for it to speed up and slow down a bit during the high speed spin. Perhaps this is just an extreme version where whatever speed control has worn too far.  ...
