Another article about Candy hit the newspaper today...

Let me get this straight: is the point of the Perfect Mix system just to thoroughly dissolve the detergent at lower temperatures thereby facilitating cleaning? If so, are they doing anything about actually flushing powdered detergent from the dispenser in the first place? Having been to see my...

Philips Variotronic 082 - Another classic saved

Costly to run? What a gorgeous machine! And what thorough action too - not just those 5 deep rinses but a very positive wash action from what I've seen. Water hog it may be but at least it makes good use of what it's filled with - none of that infuriating filling to high level only to drain...

    Boilwash

HOW is that possible? I mean...HOW??? How many people must you have in the family to wash 8-9 times daily? Frankly, the mind boggles with the possible scenarios but none of them are suitable for the public domain. If I were to be outrageously judgemental, I'd say you all must have OCD...

    Boilwash

"...a total of 3423 boilwashes since new in 2006" Tom, are you running a hospital laundry? The Aqualtis seems to have been doing two boil washes daily! By rights it should be in a skip by now ! At last calculation, my 15 year-old machine has done fewer cycles in its entire service life...and...

Do towels go mouldy at 40?

Of course not! Only if you leave them damp for too long will they go mouldy/develop a permanent bad odour/mildew. They might not be as well sanitised if you use low temperatures - I've found towels washed in warm water don't stay fresh as long. It doesn't mean they develop permanent mould!

Hotpoint top loading auto up for grabs

How exciting! Mike - I spy early/mid 1990s red on the fascia with a replacement programme dial sporting the Aquarius era blue/green 0 positions! Seems to be in good cosmetic condition overall. Am I jealous? Yes.

Any information on the Hotpoint Super dryer 1731

Liberator Dryer E 1730 My Mother bought the very similar 1730 just before I was born in 1979; it lasted until 1998 when the timer would only work occasionally and then one day it started blowing smoke. I'd been trying to give it a bit of an internal defluffing around the heater area days before...

About time I put my washer on here.

Spiracle? Lance, if you mean me then you'd best knock a couple more coffees back/put the glasses on! Though it's a catchy new name...I sound like a cartoon character! Why don't I have a Hotpoint Top Loader? Well, the high cost of London living combined with my modest wage has so far...

About time I put my washer on here.

Washing for three? That sounds like a...erm...cozy state of affairs. No wonder you want to get through it at speed! I don't envy trying to get it dry all at once...with or without that drying cupboard! UK washing powder - I'd agree with the...

About time I put my washer on here.

5 hours' washing? Well, there are worse ways to spend time with your feet up or otherwise! As a singleton, though, a twin tub does make great sense in terms of ploughing through several small loads, giving you an empty basket every week instead of forever waiting for a suitable load to amass...

About time I put my washer on here.

Glad you're amused! Yes, definitely not convinced that the autorinse feature would give wholly satisfactory results; I was advised to squish and move the clothes around in the water stream a bit whilst it filled between spins. That cold water was not easy on the hands! I prefered the final...

About time I put my washer on here.

Only one machine? Frankly, as long as it serves you well and you love it, there's no shame in having just the one! And that Hoovermatic looks well loved! I'd never got to use a twin tub until earlier in the year - and I popped my twinny cherry with a Hoovermatic. Loved the interaction with the...

    Kirkland Signature Institutional Laundry Detergent

With 400 loads in a tub you'd better LOVE it! Otherwise it could be a grim year of laundry indeed...

    Indesit WIB101 Running Amok

Having seen one of these working properly, I can attest to the speed control being pretty woozy at the best of times, so it would be normal for it to speed up and slow down a bit during the high speed spin. Perhaps this is just an extreme version where whatever speed control has worn too far. ...

Hotpoint Automatic De Luxe 1509/05 - the Phoenix has arisen!

I'm not an emotional man but... ...it almost brings a tear to my eye! Almost. Congratulations on another fantastic restoration job. Especially well worth whatever time, money and effort you've invested in the project! Now then, what bribes are you accepting to stage a test-drive...

Hotpoint Automatic De Luxe 1509/05 - the Phoenix has arisen!

This stuff is x-rated! I am VERY excited to see what happened to the 1509...beautiful even as a rust bucket! I could be VERY jealous indeed. Alex

    Phone Thread

Minor grief... Foolishly, I pulled the cord too far a couple of days ago: the phone went flying and ceased to function properly after I tried to give it a mini-overhall, thinking the bells had gone out of alignment. I've had to part out some of the other phones to get it back up and running. ...

    Phone Thread

Meanwhile, across the pond... Here's my mini collection of standard issue bell ringer/rotary dial phones from around 1970s. Not as vintage as some of you may have, but they sound fantastic! Please excuse the grainy photos...

    90 Degree's Wash!

The main problem with Bold (powder) is that the oxygen bleach content is under 5%; in Ariel, by comparison, it's 15-30%. If you were to use it on whites/lights it would struggle to remove anything bleachable. I daresay if you pepped it up with some stain remover or plain old oxy bleach (e.g...
