Ryne It may not be the timer, you could have a neutral drain pak waring? This can cause one to assume it’s a timer issue. It could be one or the other. Let’s see what others here think.

    in wash starch

Don’t remember Anyone ever asking for a hard press. Some drapes had to be pressed flat before being hung on the drapery/pleat machine, but never would have thought to hard press creases! We did charge more per pleat if the drapes where lined.

Which other detergent(s) comes close in characteristics to Cheer (powder and liquid)?

Think You have to ask yourself if you want something that performs as cheer was supposed to. (Less fading of bright colors and darks) or if you want the scent? Cuz I don’t know if you can have both. If you want to keep darks dark, then avoid optical brightners, and oxygen bleach and stay with...

Which other detergent(s) comes close in characteristics to Cheer (powder and liquid)?

If Laundress stops by I’m sure shel have a suitable suggestion for a substitute. IIRC..Cheer was for colors. So possibly a mild detergent like Seventh Generation or Ecos. They don’t contain Optical brighteners, or oxygen bleach, and O.K for lightly duty HTH

“softener leads to machine failure“ Is this true or is it hogwash?

Glen Nice job of cleaning it up. It didn’t look like it had detergent build up or gunk. More like hard water deposits? Noting too unusual for its age. They all need a good cleaning from time to time no matter what one dose.
