Did most Maytag generations look older than they were? If so, what years/decades did they fit more?

I have noticed a lot of variation in exactly how old people online seem to think old 'Tags are before they look up the serial #. For example, even though the "New Generation" center dial models were made mostly in the 70s, most people's first guess seems to be 60s (they were introduced in 66)...

    Question for the Maytag Experts

To answer your second question, Technically, they didn't really make a large capacity version of the A106 during the center dial period (1966-80). All of the large capacity single-speeds were Fabric-Matics (308 and 406/7/8).

    Question for the Maytag Experts

The other replies here are essentially what I'm saying as well. The post-center dial version of the 106 was the 112, and the 312 in its own turn was the large capacity version of that. Then the 212, 412, and 512 were the Fabric-Matics of the 12-series.

    Maytag A107 timer getting sluggish

While washing a load of dish towels in my 1975 A107 today, I noticed that the timer seems to be having a little trouble advancing. Do I need a new timer motor, or can this be remedied by lubing it up a bit?

    Maytag A490

About the year... I can't tell if it says LARGE CAPACITY or EXTRA CAPACITY. If it's the former, it's probably from 1986-88. My A506 is an 85, so it only says FABRIC-MATIC LARGE CAPACITY. The HEAVY DUTY above that was added in 86. Then in 89, "large capacity" was changed to "extra," and regular...

    Maytag A490

Great washer indeed! Very similar to my A506 (single-speed, large capacity, Fabric-Matic), except the 506 has a slider load size switch. Agree with the other replies: no reason to upgrade to 2-speed. Single speed works just fine for me, and as long as you don't wash too many delicates or anything...

    Welcoming A Westy!

Henry, congratulations on both of your new additions! Your collection has just gotten even better (if that's even possible, because it was pretty great already). I'm a Maytag guy, so of course I personally love the 106; but the Westinghouse is definitely one of the coolest machines you have...

Both of my Maytags washing - A107 and A506

Washing loads in both machines at the same time. Enjoy!

In your opinion, when was the true beginning of the end for Maytag?

I’ve heard they started using slightly cheaper parts in the early 80s when they switched from the center-dial to the dark panel, but those were still really good machines. I guess a bigger change was the switch from the helical Pitman transmission to the orbital one in 89. Even though the buyout...

Two Maytags are better than one!

My 1985 A506 now has a new companion/roommate in the form of my recently-acquired 1975 A107. I’ve yet to hook up the 107 as it did not come with hot/cold hoses. But as soon as I have those, I will hook them both up to double valves together. And in case you were wondering, sadly, the matching...

    Extremely Early Maytag A806 Washer

That is indeed one of the first 806s produced, as this generation of Maytags was introduced for 1966. Both machines look to be immaculate.

    What do you think?

Am I the only one who feels like I’m going to have a seizure from watching an orbital Maytag?

Compared to an older helical one. Especially an early orbital one with the turquoise agitator like the helicals had. That bright color and fast movements. The helicals were so much gentler, quieter, and more soothing.

    Matching Maytags

You are in luck, the 512 is an XL capacity model, same with the 506! The 282 is a pre-facelift model of this generation Maytag, so the silver trim is correct, as is the lighter colored dial. Do you have the serial #s for this new set, and for the others?

Buying a 1975 Maytag A107 (my dream machine, just like my grandparents' old one)

@opticalpopsicle What part of MA? I’m in Western - Berkshires. Congrats on your 80s Tags - the washer looks like my 506! The matching dryer to the 107 is there, but I’m only going to get the washer. They don’t light up, I believe that was only the higher models that did. Starting with the 600...

    Matching Maytags

Your washer looks just like mine (an A506)! It’s either that or a 512, the difference was the 512 had the bleach dispenser, the 506 did not. Sadly, I don’t have the matching dryer as it died years ago. I too love spotting the subtle differences in the control panels of this generation ‘Tags...

Buying a 1975 Maytag A107 (my dream machine, just like my grandparents' old one)

I will soon be the proud owner of 2 Maytags (I already have a 1985 A506). I've been wanting the A107 for quite awhile as it's the one my grandparents had for decades and finally gave up the ghost a few months ago. Unfortunately, by the time I learned about that, it was too late for me to call it...

Maytag A212. Speed or single speed?

This washer (A212) is a single-speed model. You can tell since it says FABRIC-MATIC. Of the "12" series washers, the 112-512 are all single-speed, and the 612+ are 2-speed. On an interesting note, my washer is an A506, which is identical to the 512 except for lacking a bleach dispenser. It is an...
