What year exactly did Maytag switch from the classic center-dial design to the brown panel?

Thanks guys! I thought it was either 80 or 81. I guess by 81, they'd gone completely to the brown panel. Some people said 79, but that seemed a bit early to me. Jack

What year exactly did Maytag switch from the classic center-dial design to the brown panel?

I know it was around 1980, but the answers I've seen differ slightly. Some people say 1979, 1980, 1981. Perhaps the "transition" began in 79 and lasted until 81? I have seen center dials from 80, but I think by 81 they had gone completely to the new design.

    Tips on finding vintage Maytags

BTW, there are also 2 60s machines for sale that I’ve found - one in NV and one in WA. The one in NV is only $30!

    Early Maytag

That is so cool! I found another one like this for sale in WA today. You can’t beat the price of this one though! This machine is from no later than the mid 60s, as it was in the mid/late 60s when they introduced the “wash-power-automatic” machines with the turquoise agitator.

    Tips on finding vintage Maytags

I’ve been on the hunt as well lately, as my grandparents’ 75 A107 that I was hoping to have someday recently died and was hauled away without anybody telling me. The 80s machines with the dark control panel aren’t hard to find at all. There always seems to be at least one or two around in any...

    ISO: Maytag A107

My grandparents’ 1975 Maytag A107 finally decided it was time to call it quits this past week. I always wanted it to be mine someday, but my dad purposely didn’t tell me because he thinks I’m a junker. After unsuccessfully trying to track it down after the haulaway, I was wondering if anyone...

    Is this Maytag timeline accurate?

1966: Center-dial generation debuts 1972: crystal knob introduced 1975: panel bottom changed to cold 1981: Brown/woodgrain, right dial generation debuts 1984: buttons changed from ivory to brown 1989: transmission changed from Pitman helical to short-stroke orbital 1990: “Dependable Care”...

Were the post-1980 woodgrain Maytags considered somewhat “boring” compared to the center-dials?

They’re definitely not as brightly colored as their predecessors. I know many people seem to think it was a sad change. Personally, I think it was just a modernization; the center-dials looked 70s and the woodgrain looked 80s. And they were the same machines internally.

    70s, 80s, and 90s Maytags - Comparison

The 70s (75 A107) and 80s (85 A506) are my grandparents’, hopefully they will be mine someday. I would say the 90s Dependable Care line were the last true ‘Tags. How would you say they compared to the other 2 machines pictured? I definitely prefer the Pitman transmission over the Orbital one.

When did the Maytag A107 get a fourth temperature setting like the 108?

It seems that the earlier 107s (like my grandparents’) had the basic three temperature settings like a 106, but the later ones had the additional HOT-WARM setting like a 108. Anyone know when that was added?

    1975 Maytag A107 and 1985 A506

My grandparents’ 2 Maytags - hopefully someday to be mine. The 107 is at their main house, so despite being the older one, it is the daily driver - especially since they haven’t been to the second house in nearly 2 years for various reasons. It is original to when they bought the house in 78...

    Maytag A506 or 512?

    Mystery solved...it is a 506! Dates to April 1985.

    Maytag A506 or 512?

@gsd-dan, I'm a basic/BOL guy personally. I'm not big on the TOL models of anything; I just want something that gets the job done, doesn't cost too much, and is easy to use. These 2 washers are a prime example of that. As are my Electrolux vacuums which are straight-suction only, no power nozzles.

    Maytag A506 or 512?

Thanks guys. BTW, it is an XL capacity (19 gal). I think the text below the Maytag logo says FABRIC-MATIC LARGE CAPACITY. Jack

    Maytag A506 or 512?

This is at my grandparents' vacation house. I haven't seen it in about 2 years (due to Covid), but will be going there this weekend so I'll get a better look at it. I can't tell the 506 and 512 apart - which model does this one appear to be? BTW, I've also attached a picture of the 1975 107 at...
