1952 refrigerator repair - please advise!

In proper repairs one finds the Freon leak. The tech removes all the Freon; then pressurizes it with Nitrogen, and often uses an ultrasonic microphone to hear the leak. If big the leak may spit out the telltale dye they often use to find leaks. The leak is then fixed; then they recheck again...

1952 refrigerator repair - please advise!

So does this unit use Freon 12 or Freon 22? Normally the patent plate will be marked say X oz R12 or X oz R22. A unit that is low on gas has a leak; and will run a higher percentage of the time. Many refrigerators and freezers have long lives if left in one place and when moved the shocks...

    WHOA!!!

Americans Love Remodeling of Homes Here in the USA remodeling of homes is common. Whatever you build another will declare it dated, obsolete. If your house is a 1970's ranch home with a lowly 4/12 pitch, a new owner will want a 12/12 pitch and an attic full of 2x4's every 2 feet, so the house...

    Moving Vintage Machines

With my 1976 Westy; the majority of its 260 Lb mass is sprung; ie the tub and tub front , spin basket and 5 concrete weights and pump way more than the frame. The non sprung part is the frame; front door; and top and controls. These weigh 1/4 to 1/3 of the total 260 Lbs. Thus if your crater...

    The dryer squeaks?

Dryers rarely wear out. The bearings and felts can be replaced on most. Finding a timer can be a goosehunt on an extremely old one. Most dryers are replaced because folks want a matched pair. A couple I know got a new dryer because their expert repair guy said one cannot get a timer on such...

    Moving Vintage Machines

The top shipping rods contect to the tubs flange where the pink arrows point to. I want to say that the older 1940's and 1950's westys used this scheme too.

    Moving Vintage Machines

With the Westinghouse Fl washer like my 1976 it has 3/8" diameter shipping rods that connects the tub to the frame; to constrain the tub. Without the rods in place if the tub moves too much its "shoes" will jump off its damper plates and one gets even more motion. On rod connects to the red tub...

Poll - Fabric softener used on towels

Here I about never use fabric softener. The water is so soft none is required at all. It is really only used maybe once every year or two maybe on some new towels; or if somebody vists and "is in to using it". There are two bottles of it that my mom bought eons ago and she passed away about 20...

    Moving a front load washer

I actually moved the machine several times when the day I got it. Then I added the hoses; removed the bolts; turned on the water valves. The unit to when moved closer to the wall clearly had a some extra water if I noted it was heavier. I doubt if I can sense a few ounces on a 197 Lb device

    Moving a front load washer

Combo52; The LG here when first connected made an oddball running water noises while its generator and tanks whatever filled up. The washer to move around feels heavier thus MINE probably holds a gallon at least or even more on top of its 197 Lbs. Its added water is more like a gallon or...

    BEWARE: BR & H Snuggle

The reason folks use fragrances is they purposely WANTED their clothes and washed items to smell of the fragrance on the bottle. *IF it smell is too much just try less goop! :) The same thing happens with perfumes folks use and spices in foods; if it is too strong try less "goop". :) I know...

    Moving a front load washer

Repair clinic and even Sears sells the shipping bolts for many FL washers. Another source is a local repair shop for washers. Whether one "gets away" with no shipping braces all depends on the shock and vibration the unit "sees" in its move. If you want an exact answer than ponder if one needs...

Does anyone else prefer front load washers with REAR control panels?

Re "My house was built 1988, when there was no domestic FL market" In 1988 in Southern California old J C Penney even sold front load Westinghouse washers. To say there was NO market is a bit of a stretch. Far better to say it was a small paltry market that most folks ignored. They were not...

Does anyone else prefer front load washers with REAR control panels?

With the 1976 westy FL washer, its controls are in the rear. Variants of this design have front controls, this was done to allow stacking of a dryer on top of the washer. Since most all washers of type did not have a stand, the rear control variant allowed a slanted panel for easier seeing...

where could I get hold of...

a google search shows this as a common 6203 bearing; sounds small. ie a 17mm bore 40mm od and 12mm width. This bearing is very common. It was used on the Generator of Fords 1930's model A car; it is used on a 2011 car too. Here in the USA they are so common that that cost about 2 dollars as...
