    Another one exploads again, BOOOM!!

cornutt; when a town has no codes or inspectors, then folks can build treehouses, have exposed wires, place sockets in bathtubs! The 25 foot max length has been in the building codes over 1/2 century ; and it is derated for each bend. If Beavis and Butthead want to build a fire trap not up to...

Give it to me straight: how long have I got?

there will come a time where it will be impossible to repair there will come a time where it will be impossible to repair There are folks who repair and fix items well beyond what "normal" industry support declares "impossible" or "no parts available". In cars when I lived in Los Angeles, one...

    My Computer Died

RE : "I can never understand why when some thing works well, and you understand it, they have to change it." When I went to work in the computer industry I was told the only thing constant is "change". This was before the PC came out and when most used punch cards.

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

Good to see you got it to run on 120 volts. Here the old 1976 westy's low setting as I mentioned has it run on 120 volts. This setting is usefull here to slowly dry items. It is also usefull when I have no power and use my 4000 watt generator. It puts out 16.7 amps on each 120 volt leg.

    Another one exploads again, BOOOM!!

Cornutt RE :"I think one reason is that there are a lot of people in the States these days who want their laundry area to be inside of a master bedroom suite, often in a closet or bath. Some architects don't think about the dryer vent routing when they place the laundry in the design; they...

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

CircleW; Many old 240V dryers can be hooked up to run on 120 volts. Without an actual schematic; a blanket statement that all are convertible works until one has an accident, or somebody is shocked, killed or fire starts. There are many consumer items that it is easier to avoid litigation...

    motion gimmicks

Here both our 1947 and 1976 Westinghouse FL washers washed in the sub hour range. The 1976 that I still own max time is 42 minutes. If stuff is not too dirty the time can be less say 32 to 37 minutes total. Americas usage of FL washers is not new; it is 70 years. American Front Loaders today...

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

Today if one buys a *new* 240 volt electric dryer at Lowes, Sears, Home Depot etc there is really not reason they have to be usable on 120 volts too. It is worse today because much is imported from counties where 230 to 240 volts is norm. Thus a more modern dryer might have a 240 volt timer and...

Chlorine bleach... How to use it?

Here on this side of the pond; I have always heard NOT to use liquid chlorine bleach with blood stains. ie if one uses bleach, use a non chlorine bleach. Since this old stance is older than anybody alive; there are probably exceptions Usage of hydrogen peroxide as a bleach is sometimes...

    Poor lad

Here scrap steel fetches roughly 35 cents per Lb. Thus if you have some easy to nick steel by your house; 100 Lbs/45Kg will yield 35 US dollars with a few minutes work using a hand truck. If one works at McDonalds serving fries; one might make 9 dollars per hour, but this might halt ones...

    Poor lad

Scrap metal is often a cash business here On this side of the pond, scrap metal guys are often paid in cash or use many different tax id's; thus the whole thing is extremely tax free. The metal scrap recyclers often ask few questions. The scrap guys might remove some sell-ible items from a...

    Poor lad

Folks steal steel from all; it crosses all races. RE : "apparently this must have been some sort of bullying or hate thing. Or why would anyone make the effort and haul away several used washers? " Here in the usa steel scrap is worth a lot. Thus it really does not matter whether one is from...

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

My old westy 1976 dryer is like this; one connects one of the HOT lugs to the neutral when used on 120 volts only. Having an actual schematic is the best thing; ie no assuming, no fires, no shocks! Assuming is dangerous. Another on this site mentioned in another thread they sell/make a 240...

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

Just guessing; it looks like on this other Maytag DE312 that one would have to tie the Aqua Neutral and Red Hot L2 together for 120 volt usage. ie the heater coil would get no voltage unless L2/Red has some current through it.

    motion gimmicks

It is not a gimmick at all; it is about the only thing avail The modern USA washer is designed to grab the tax credits of several hundred dollars per washer; a credit to the washer maker. Thus the water usage is little by design, often really a water shower, sprinkle, tinkle. The water usage...

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

MRX; in the usa a common 120 volt plug is typically rated at 15 amps, but there is a variant that has a sideways T in the left Neutral hole that is a 20 amp version. A device that has a 20 amp plug will fit into 20 amp sockets only, but a 15 amp device will fit in either 15 or 20 amp sockets...

    Dryer wiring question, 115 volts.

Before 1947 a new house in the USA did not HAVE to have 240 volt service, it was optional. Pre WW2 houses often just had 120 volt service of 30 amps or 60 amps. Electric dryers marketed eons ago, 1940's to 1970's etc had often capability of being used on 120 volts too. This means the heater...
