    What's Wrong With This Picture?

Double percolators I don't know that having a pair of percolators is necessarily an odd thing. Granted a family of lesser means would probably choose one and use it until it died, but having the option of a stove-top Corning or an electric to use was a nice little luxury that wasn't...

    First vintage appliance

Nice turquoise! I like that range, Turquoisedude...but even more, that Club dutch oven is BEAUTIFUL! I've never seen that color before. My mother had a couple pieces in the same sickly beige that our rotary desk phone came in, and a newer dutch oven and skillet in harvest gold. And none of...

    Recipe Request: Quiche

Using ham If using diced ham, my thought would be to scatter it evenly around the bottom of the crust before pouring in the egg/cheese mixture. I think some recipes have you distribute the shredded cheese in the same way, and just pour the egg/dairy mixture over the cheese/ham. Also, a...

Question about vintage "Mirro" pressure cookers.

My mom had a pressure cooker when i was young. I'm 99.9% sure she still has it, although I haven't seen it lately--but haven't looked, either. I guess it was a Mirro...I think it looked different from the one in the pic above, but that little round thing that sits on top and rattles is exactly...

New Use for Vintage Stove ...

Flair Maybe a trundle bed? PS: Desecration of a Flair would result in being hunted down as human prey, like Jane Fonda did to Dabney Coleman in 9 to 5.

New Use for Vintage Stove ...

Words fail me... But can I just say that was a Magic Chef, not an Amana? And that "RadarRange" was a microwave, not a stove?

Meet the Wards Airline Stereo-Danish Modern

Danish Modern-ish The middle picture in the catalog image 112561 posted might not be strictly considered Danish Modern (it IS from Montgomery Ward's, after all) but the legs are a very good copy of Lane furniture from the era. We have a 1950's Grundig console that we paid $25 for stocked with...

    Please help--Grease removing laundry detergent?

Biz Thanks for the tip, Angus! a Biz stock-up would be a good way to make the minimum purchase next time they have super cheap coupons in their ad! I've tried the Tide Oxy booster, and I just find it so-so. Those Biz enzymes are a must--especially for white loads.

    1959 Coffee Maker Report

The Westinghouse pictured is the one my mom still has. I imagine it was a wedding present. Considering my dad never drank coffee and she only started this year(!), it's not surprising it's lasted this long. And she still doesn't really use it--she got herself a Keurig machine when she took up...

    Please help--Grease removing laundry detergent?

My 2 cents I've used Dawn for years if I know where a greasy spot is. I LOVE Biz, but it's gotten very hard to find in this area. Stop & Shop and Walmart here don't carry it and Target is hit or miss (mostly miss). The other solution: Resolve/Spray N Wash Stain Stick. If we have a dinner...

    Making Coffee Custard

The result.... Yum! The "original recipe" had a very delicate flavor, whereas the almond milk imparted a somewhat heartier flavor, for lack of a better description, in that batch.

    Making Coffee Custard

Trying this tonight Made half a batch 'real' and half the batch with honey and almond milk in place of the sugar and milk, because my husband is a giant pain in the--I mean, he's on the Paleo diet. Just took them put of the oven and they look good. Can't wait until they cool so I can try them!

Remembering Service Stations of the Past

Vapor lock I agree, Allen. Back in the 80's, my old VW Rabbits did the exact thing in hot weather if I tried to run bargain gas. Back then, the cut-rate stations were the only ones to blend in 10% ethanol. for most cars of the time, it wasn't a big deal, but i think the VW engines ran a bit...

Remembering Service Stations of the Past

Memory lane Reading all these great stories and looking at the great pics has got me thinking--trying to see if I remember all the gas stations in the small town in Ohio where I grew up... On the north end of town, there was a Sohio (still there as a BP-Lassus Bros. Handy Dandy) and a Gulf...

    Rich's Bakeshop Coconut Cake

Mike--thanks for the icing recipe! (Like I need any help fattening up for winter--or any season!) Phil--thanks for the Hudson's pics! Other than the Marketplace, the rest of the store was looking pretty shabby by the time we made it there, sadly. I'm sure all the best merchandise had been...

    Maytag RR DD dishwasher

Our family had one of these for our first-ever dishwasher. It was a white convertible-portable and a little higher trim. It had 5 option buttons, a group of two and a group of three--no recollection what they selected, but my guess is the group of two probably chose heat dry or air dry. That...

    Rich's Bakeshop Coconut Cake

Rich's Fudge Cake Mike--Yes, I'm being told that is exactly the fudge cake he remembers. Going to have to try playing with the coconut cake recipe to see if we can reproduce it. Thanks! Phil--see above, however your link sounds absolutely incredible. A must try! Hudson's had a small, but...

    Rich's Bakeshop Coconut Cake

Rich's Fudge Cake? My husband is an Atlanta native and tells me that Rich's Bakeshop had a fudge cake that was every bit as good as the coconut cake. I don't suppose that recipe is floating around somewhere as well? Ken--thanks for posting the link to the 2008 thread. I'm also a big fan of...

    POD 10/3/14

I'm pretty sure the harvest gold Kenmore in today's Picture of the Day is the same model and vintage my aunt had for years. When they moved into their first house, they bought a full matched set of harvest gold Kenmores: washer, dryer, stove and fridge. Now...the competition pictured. Brand...
