Trump administration sued over dishwasher efficiency

It's all a joke. IIRC government efficiency ratings are done on certain cycles whether it be washing machines, dishwashers, etc. The manufacturers tailor those cycles to the regulations so they can claim the efficiency rating, and the other cycles aren't bothered by it by and large from what I...

READ THIS before you buy a New LG Front load washer. LG's New Scam

Miele is diffidently the best 24" compact machine Just wondering if you knew that the W1 and T1 Mieles now have similar capacity the Miele SLC models had some 8-10 years ago? We do a set of queen sheets with extra pillow cases and still have plenty of room for more. Could easily do 2 sets of...

    Christmas Morning Egg Strata:

Interesting! I've always used all sausage but have thought of using a mixture. But I put the bread in the pan, sprinkle the cooked sausage over it then pour the liquid and spice mixture over it. Then I put the cheese on top after the first bake.   Chuck

    35mm projector slides cleaning/restoring

We have a locally well-known media transfer guy who specializes in 8mm and other transfers to digital media. The one thing he does not recommend transferring to CD or DVD except for ease of showing is slides. He says it's because their clarity and image "beauty" cannot be successfully...

    Aladdin mantle lamps anyone?

If/when you get one, you may want to look in to the sootless/odorless lamp oil to use in it! It's not perfect, but cuts down the oil-annoyance factors many times!   Chuck

    Lookout-Tweakers stealing catalytic converters!

I remember this was a "thing" some years ago. Sorry it's back.    People.   Chuck

A gripe about dishwasher detergent packs

I've never liked them and have seen where some of the thicker plastic in the corners of the pods have gotten stuck in the spray arm nozzles!   Chuck

What's with the 'machine wash cold, gentle cycle, tumble dry low' tags lately?

IMHO, It's OK to run cold and/or delicate cycles, but run a sanitize or "clean machine" cycle periodically to help rid the machine of nasties that can thrive in cold water. Some machines have a warning that will pop-up, advising you to run sanitize after X number of cold/cool/warm cycles.   Chuck

    Baking Issue -- Need Advice

Ralph, I got a digital scale that does ounces and grams off of eBay for something like $7 including shipping. It actually works great!   Chuck

"Five qualities vintage appliances had that we need today"

Thanks for posting this! All of them are valid points, but the "feel of durability" and optimism, I think, are the most important. Most of what we buy today is disposable-by-design and I hate that. The more bells and whistles something has, the more one or more of them will fail and let you...

    Gourmia air fryer

Well, I believe the original question was answered. Someone Rich knows on Facebook said he never coats with oil, despite instructions to do so in the book. His smoked the first few times and hasn't since. Also, with what I saw in a couple of recipes on YouTube, wings can just go in the preheated...

    Gourmia air fryer

I'm going to try another batch of wings without oiling them. I've looked at a few vids re: air fryers and wings today and they don't oil them. I did it because for once, I was following directions. Stupid me!!!!   Chuck

    Baking Issue -- Need Advice

Ralph, ROFL! In addition to recipe tweaks, I have printed recipes sticking out of the book and hand-written recipes on the blank fly-leaf (or vacat) pages in that book! I get so pissed when I can't find a fave recipe but it's my own fault!   Since we're re-doing the downstairs kitchen, I need...

    Baking Issue -- Need Advice

once you bake a particular recipe, note what the time was Eddie-   That's one of the reasons I can't get rid of my falling-apart-a-bit Fannie Farmer cookbook from 1987! All kinds of notes made in recipes re: time, temp, ingredients, etc.!   Chuck

    Gourmia air fryer

So I finally got us an air fryer. It's a Gourmia 7qt that got very good reviews. I thought I'd try it out last night with the main reason for getting it... chicken wings!   The good news is that they came out great! Not quite like deep-fried but better than baked/broiled. Acceptable for this...

    Baking Issue -- Need Advice

Temp swing Hey Ralph,   I have to respectfully disagree with Matt on a few points:   -Oven thermometer- the cheap dial thermometers sold at Walmart, Ace, etc take a long time to read the correct temp of the oven by way of their design. If you're concerned about the calibration of your oven...

    SOMAT 'SMART' automatic detergent dispenser

Jerome. Oh, but they do! Miele introduced TwinDos in the US about 2+ years ago, earlier in Europe. Detergent and optical brightener are dispensed at the optimal time, in the optimal amount for the cycle/soil level you've chosen.   Personally, I don't like the smell of the detergent that was...

GE Monitor Top Fridge Repair - Capillary Tube conversion...

Yes, the dome. Last time it was on for hours- maybe a day-ish. We used it at a couple of wash-ins years ago without issue then all of a sudden went to use it for something and discovered that.   Chuck

GE Monitor Top Fridge Repair - Capillary Tube conversion...

John (robbinsandmyers) Amen to that! We have a monitor-top that needs a bit of attention as well. Runs, but the "head" gets too hot. Also looking to pass it along reasonably though. And then there's the '38 Frigidare that doesn't want to maintain any warmer than 10F!   Ugh!   Chuck

What Temperature Is Your Tap Hot Water?

has potential to damage inlet/mixing valves that involve.... Amen, Glenn. When Rich's grandfather built this house he put in a boiler that was about 5' high, 2' wide and 5' long (forced hot-water for heating). Why? That's what he put in the auto-repair garage he had up the street so he bought a...
