Colston Ariston Automatic Wash and Tumble Dry 850 XD

They were made by : Riber = RIccardo BERtolino The company seems to have just disappeared out of the mainstream market for laundry appliances in the late 1970s. I think there was a lot of...

Colston Ariston Automatic Wash and Tumble Dry 850 XD

I found the vent kit! Here's the vent kit for the machine. It's a standard dryer hose with an adaptor that fits into the filter bracket. Apparently the door interlock was another regular failure point as was the door catch, which was subsequently replaced with a metal one which can be...

Colston Ariston Automatic Wash and Tumble Dry 850 XD

How do modern washer dryers deal with lint? Is it just washed out during the wash cycle and ends up being pumped out ? I know most pumps would be pretty unaffected by lint. In general the filters on most machines are really just traps to prevent large coins, buttons or other debris that is too...

Colston Ariston Automatic Wash and Tumble Dry 850 XD

I remember it as being a fairly quiet machine though, other than having a very noisy pump! Is the induction motor English Electric ? The only very big flaw on the design was how it handled dryer exhausting. It really should have had a filter somewhere accessible and a hose out the back. It...

I still can't remember what the A and B buttons did. S was just on/off.

This is its slightly older 1974 washer-only predecessor Coleston, Thor and a few other brands seem to have simply been purchasing and rebadging Riber machines.

Colston Ariston Automatic Wash and Tumble Dry 850 XD

My grandparents had one of these until the early 2000s I vaguely remember it. It was called a Thor 850XD here though. They were a bit of a crazy design by any standards! The dryer is vented, and just blows the steam straight out through those two hoses and a filter straight into the room! So...

US Expat Describes The Best And Worst Things About England

Yeah, bathroom cleaning goes a bit over the top in most of the world. Lots of tiled surfaces and powerful cleaning products get used. The basement really wasn't a feature of 20th century construction here at all. Houses are usually either built with a suspended wooden floor over the...

US Expat Describes The Best And Worst Things About England

While relatively few Irish people actually live in apartments (they're less than 7% of homes here lowest number in the EU), I've noticed that the ones I've visited tend to have a laundry closet setup these days too. A lot of them seem to have a big closet in the kitchen that contains a gas...

How to hook up multiple washers in one room

It's done differently here. In older installations there's a 63amp RCD (GFCI) connected to all the MCB (miniature circuit breakers) feeding the socket outlets and also water heating appliances. In newer installations, there's often now an RCBO (combined GFCI and breaker module) on each...

    Maytag 641C dryer

You can see the similarity between those and the old 1970s Hoover Tumble Dryers in this market. A lot of the layout (particularly the heating elements) and even components look very familiar. This would appear to be some kind of a derivative of that design scaled down to European cabinet size...

How to hook up multiple washers in one room

GFCI's on all outlet circuits here and you don't get nuisance trips really unless there's a genuine fault. For example, the dishwasher's tripped it but it's invariably been because of a leak!

Who's going to be the first to buy it? Daewoo DWD-M301WP

It looks very like those Australian and Japanese small, wall mounted clothes dryers. http://savewithgas.alintaenergy.com.au/getmetafile/6ce2baaf-1bb7-494c-aee7-57ea554a2fea/Dry-Soft-6-Dryer.aspx?maxsidesize=940 I think they just come in 4KG and 6KG size max. I could certainly see something...

    Neff dishwasher Sound....

Ah, that would explain it. Stainless steel panels are really reflective of sound and can act like a big reverberation board. If it's not a problem, just put up with it. Otherwise, use an alternative panel made from wood or even a tiled surface with smaller tiles will scatter the noise.

    Neff dishwasher Sound....

Is the door closing tightly ? If it's a built in machine, it's possible that the door's not closing as well as it originally did or has become strained a bit. Push the door shut tighter when it's washing and listen to hear if the sound has gone away again. It's also possible the internal sound...

GE dryer with bad timer changed now timer goes in reverse

It could be one of those subspace anomalies that the crew of the Enterprise occasionally used to run into! :)

    speaking of weird electric lights...

Well you've NIMBYs (not in my back yard) and also a problem we have here quite a bit BANANAs Build Absolutely Nothing anywhere Near Anyone/Anything. Some of the arguments I'm hearing against wind turbines for example are really pushing beyond ridiculous. I can understand someone wouldn't like...

    speaking of weird electric lights...

It sounds like interesting technology, but I guess it's probably a bit impractical for most lighting uses compared to normal lighting. Wireless power's still a bit of a 'holy grail' that hasn't quite been reached. Tesla's experiments were certainly interesting though. Can you imagine what the...

GE dryer with bad timer changed now timer goes in reverse

I remember we had a very old dryer (from the late 70s) and one of my brothers (as a kid) forced the knob backwards (it only turned one direction) and it started to run backwards too. We ended up having to buy a new dryer as the machine part wasn't available.

    Neff dishwasher Sound....

Most likely problem is something's gotten into the pump. Remove all the filters and check it carefully (with the machine unplugged). I know we had an Bosch dishwasher of that era (Neff are BSH appliances too) and it made a rather odd squeaky noise after a few years. It was caused by a seal on...
