I understand that whirlpools tend to have deep narrow tubs in comparison to maytag's wider shallow tubs. How do the depth and diameter compare between a whirlpool direct drive and a maytag tub (dependable care for example)?

Oddly enough I've never had much of an issue with a direct drive machine, but we had quite a few items shredded by our early 80s whirlpool belt drive years ago.

I have noticed that the normal cycle on my VMW dumbs down the hot setting, where heavy duty uses constant hot water. I'm fine with that - the only time I need the super hot water is on towels or whites when I also want the deep rinse. There's no need to shrink my colors.

It's nice that SQ is still leaving the ability to adjust the water pressure switch in the equation. I'm not too keen on Whirlpool's deep wash feature... It indeed is a deep wash! I like the way GE allows you to add a few gallons at a time. Whirlpool it's all or nothing.
