The Great Debate. Gas vs Electric Dryers

In terms of comparing the performance and user experience of vented electric versus gas dryers, I can't say I've ever noticed a difference.  Of course there are differences between makes and models etc., but I've never noticed a difference resulting from being gas or electrically heated.

The Great Debate. Gas vs Electric Dryers

Here in Southern California, my gas and electricity rates are tiered.   Gas starts out at $0.05/kWh and then increases by 1.5 cents to $0.065/kWh. Electricity starts out at $0.35/kWh and then goes up to $0.45/kWh.   We always end up in the higher tiers, so any change in usage will be...

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

It's a shame that we'll never know what this machine was subjected to by its previous owner(s) and unfortunately I did not inspect the outer tub when I got the machine, so we'll never know for sure when this rust started.   What I can say is that I have probably only used chlorine bleach in...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

Update: Thanks for the advice on fixing up this washer.  I'm pleased to say it's working great with no leaks!  I removed the pump and it showed no signs of ever having leaked, so I think the dripping during draining might have been due to a loose hose.  Nevertheless I installed the new pump but...

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

It's certainly much worse than I was expecting.  I definitely want to keep this set, so I'll fix the tub with POR-15 and just hope it holds up!

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

If I could get a new tub under warranty, that would be great.  But I don't know who the original owner was and the warranty was never transferred to me, so I don't know if there's anything I can do about that now.

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

I've just removed the lint filter.  Now, I could leave all these remaining components untouched and simply clean, prep and apply POR-15 to the tub below these components (there is enough room), leaving them in place and undisturbed (my preferred method).   Or is there any need to start taking...

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

Hi guys.  I've owned my 11-year-old Speed Queen washer for the last 4 years.  I haven't used it during the past year, as I've been using my Lady Kenmore TL and my Neptune FL.   I removed the inner wash basket today for the first time and could hardly believe the amount of rust!  It's all very...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

Hi James.  With the rear access panel removed, I've watched it start dripping during draining and then I've unplugged it and put my hand in there to feel around the pump area (and other areas).  I'm not certain but it seems like it's the pump itself, it could be coming from the seal between the...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

Thank you, Melvin!  I've ordered the pump.  Now I'll search for information and (hopefully) videos on how to replace it.  If I run into trouble, I'll be back here crying for help!

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

However, there is a leak that only happens during drain.  It appears to be coming from the pump.  It is not coming from the new self-cleaning lint filter, which I've just installed.   I wanted to buy this 4-port pump to replace my 4-port pump, but the box of this pump mentions manual-clean...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

Update: Yesterday I prepped the tub and centre post and then applied a couple of coats of POR-15.   And then I applied J-B Weld around the drain port over the layers of POR-15.   Tested today and no leaks at all during washing!

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

Thanks, Sean!  I've just taken a wire brush to it and also come CLR.     I've just discovered a couple more leaks.  The tub drain area is leaking and also the pump has a couple of drips too.   I was hoping to be able to apply sealant/treatment without removing the outer tub if possible.   ...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

From what I've read of this site, I was thinking of using something like CLR to remove the rust and residue and perhaps a wire brush on the centre post.  Maybe sandpaper too.   Then I guess I would need to apply something to seal and protect the metal from further rust etc.  Would that be a...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

I've searched this site and read a lot about things like POR-15, W-B Weld and more.  But I don't know what would be the most appropriate thing to do in this case.  All help much appreciated!  Thank you!   Mark
