I fear that they will be very sad when they find out what "reasonable" is.

    Another round of refrigerator children

I am having a manufacturer of cartridge heaters make them.  They cost approx. $38 each.   The heater leads in these units are a twisted pair.  I haven't tried to pull these with pliers yet.  The insulation is hard and won't flex.  To remove the old heater, I removed the badge and clipped the...

    Another round of refrigerator children

Yes, the oil heater.  It's there to boil the refrigerant out of the oil.  They;ll run without them, but not well.   I am going to have to pull new wire back to the control for the heater.  There isn't any slack to connect a new heater.    I have five of this model.  I think two of LH and...

    Sears suppliers getting concerned

The accountants in conjunction with the COO work to reduce costs and increase profit.  These cost reductions effect quality of goods and store operations.  Lack of staff or ridiculous company policies are rarely to blame of the store management.   A company I used to work for almost never...

    Another round of refrigerator children

Ken,   Yes, the float gets stuck on these and oil gets logged in the evaporator.  These DR1's are just 1/10 hp.  They don't like to not be used.  You would also be horrified to have watch it get unloaded.  This was in someones garage and was saved by the clean out crew.   Kenny,   Thank...

    Another round of refrigerator children

One of the latest This is a 1931 model. The heater was bad. I replaced it and flipped it on. It was running rough with not much cooling. I stuck a defrost heater in the evaporator and heated it up as much as I could barely touch. I unplugged the heater. I entertained myself with Christmas...

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

Your electrician friend is correct about meters. There's nothing you can do to improve the safety of a sealed motor. All you're doing is worrying yourself. I've done the same thing. You just have to accept it as it is and move on.

Phil, The oil used is mineral oil. The refrigerant is so2. It's very difficult to change the oil as the so2 and mineral oil don't combine well. It makes me wonder what you're friend did to it. Moral of the story is, if it works leave it alone. The open coil units are from 1927-32.

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

You're supposed to be reading the amps used.  Everything in the country is on 60 cycle power I believe.

I am well past out of room.  That's the 5th DR1.  I joked to a friend that I would stop at 7 and paint them rainbow colors!

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

I have read resistance on many 1930's units.  If you make good contact, you'll get consistent readings.  Normally, I check a reading and move right along.  Maybe I am not giving it time to give me another.

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

Your meter could be to blame, you could be making poor contact or you could have a compressor issue. The reality is that it's working and cooling and should be left alone until it fails.

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

I had a monitor top with some grounding that I got running. Unfortunately, it got worse after six months and was done. It's going to get rewound because it's an awesome fridge through.

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

The three compressor leads are run, start and common. You're going to read resistance from any two of them. That's the motor. The two leads that give you the highest are the run and start. The next highest is the start and common. The lowest is the run and common. This is how you figure...

    Another round of refrigerator children

Ken, I have 20-25. Both of the units on crates have a capacitor/transformer block. The 3 size and above units run as a polyphase motor. Think of it as a start and run capacitor. One third of that block is a 8 mfd capacitor. Another collector figured that the run capacitor would be 170...

Need advice on refigerator compressor replacement.....

Customline, You should be able to get consistent readings. Does it run and cool right? If so, let it do so until it quits in my opinion. It's hard to find a technician that will work outside the box so to speak. Most just want a part number of forget it. I am thankful that I found a very...

    Another round of refrigerator children

I made my last trip for the year to pick up some strays. I have two friends in the Dayton area. One had a Victor Orthophonic waiting for me. I already had the electric version, but was craving the crank variety. The other friend had rescued a DRB3 monitor top unit. It would have been on the...
