    Home Phone Service Advice Needed

Jeff ... "Reliability has been good enough that I very rarely have to contact customer service, but when I do, I have to go through endless phone trees like just about every other company." Two VERY good points here. 1. I've NEVER had to contact the telephone company for any service-related...

    Home Phone Service Advice Needed

Won't work. I speak as someone with rotary dial phones. The only way they'll work is with the old-fashioned telephone company. What is it about Verizon you don't like? I've been using Verizon/Bell Atlantic/NYNEX/New York Telephone my whole life and I've never been happier.

    iMac has died ...

So the video card on my big fancy iMac (2008, 24-inch) has apparently fried itself. BUT ... I'm learning that some people have had some success in either replacing the video card or fixing it (cleaning it) with a butane lighter. Anyone have any experience? For various reasons, I absolutely...

    Sterling Silver Flatware

Sterling rules ... There is absolutely nothing wrong with using sterling every day; it was actually the case in the upper classes centuries ago before the invention of stainless steel. And, of course, before the invention of dishwashers. As I've said before, I really do not understand...

    First "built in" appliances

Right down to ... ... the kind of (or at least the LOOK of) stereo speakers a rich ad exec would have in his home entertainment system in the late '60s.

    First "built in" appliances

Yep ... "Built ins have been around forever...." Most likely influenced by the Frank Lloyd Wright movement, which championed all things built-in. In the '60s, the absolute height of luxury was a television set built into the the living room wall. So it's not surprising that Don Draper has one:

New refrigerator needed-help and advice appreciated

I think ... ... much of the maintenance issues with refrigerators stem from the automatic ice makers -- something I've never been interested in because I don't like drinking water with fluoride in it (and none of the fridge filters are powerful enough to filter out the fluoride), so I just make...

New refrigerator needed-help and advice appreciated

French doors ... ... I think are the best compromise. I've always hated side-by-sides because the refrigerator section is so narrow. Sometimes I need to slide entire cookie sheets in the fridge when I'm baking. My Frigidaire is the traditional freezer on the top, but if I'd have had my...

Counter depth? Really? Those feel so limiting. I have a standard free-standing Frigidaire from 2006 that's running like it was still brand-new.

Who thinks moderns of washers of today should bring back true wash and rinse tempatures?

Agreed, Andrew ... "The point is, you simply can't get good results with the amount of water these machines use, regardless of how it operates. There's just not enough for it to flow through the clothes and suspend the dirt and soap. The lack of hot, or even decently warm water furthers the...
