New Speed Queen 7009 Front-Load Washer & Companion Dryer

Yes Mark It dispenses Clorox in the prewash or if none then in the main wash. And yes the tub is stainless but it is not shiny chrome-like stainless. Instead it’s a very unusual earth tone shade, semi glossy. I dig it. I also like the curved fins which pour a lot of water on top of the load...

New Speed Queen 7009 Front-Load Washer & Companion Dryer

One other thing About once per month you will want to pull the boot back and stick a Q-tip in those compartmentalized sections of the black rubber barrier. They collect hair and lint which would get nasty after awhile. I don’t use a hot prewash if there are stains that would be set by hot...

New Speed Queen 7009 Front-Load Washer & Companion Dryer

Workaround I suppose if you aren’t doing a prewash you could wait 5” or so after the wash cycle has begun and then add the Clorox by diluting it with water and pouring it in the detergent compartment of the drawer.

New Speed Queen 7009 Front-Load Washer & Companion Dryer

Chlorine bleach timing Oh, something you need to know! My SQ FL is 6 or 7 years old by now, so yours might be different. But mine puts Clorox in for the pre-wash, which of course is the wrong time because the chlorine defeats the detergent enzymes. SO I wait until the pre-wash is filled...

New Speed Queen 7009 Front-Load Washer & Companion Dryer

Congratulations Love my SQ FL. It has never failed to get out a stain. If you want your white wash cycle to be super hot and stay that way, all you have to do is select a pre-wash. The laundry will of course cool down the first hot fill a bit, but the second will be hot and stay hot. The...

    Childhood home /vintage things

Such a mind blowing paradox Photos from the past make us so wistful. To realize that in our 20s we thought our folks would always be there in that house. In our 50s and 60s it’s so hard to comprehend how much time has gone by, and how much our lives have changed since. And that we can never...

I am contemplating selling my Whirlpool direct drive top load washer and purchasing a front loader

Do it You will be amazed at how much cleaner and better rinsed your clothes can be with a FL, and how much less detergent and water you use. Especially detergent. A bottle or box will last 3 or 4 times longer. The only thing is the FL does take longer and you will need to set it to do extra...

After driving the same car for 16 years, I bought a new one!

A manual transmission! OMG lucky you. I want one and I want one now! I have always had cars with manual trannies, for 40 years. I just had to buy a new car and had to settle for an auto for the first time in my life, and I really don’t like it. It’s easier to drive a stick. Knowing what...

A Royal Restoration - Summer of Love Speed Queens!

Wow Breathtaking. One of the most attractive washer pairs ever. I had no idea they ran that quietly when new. SQ fluid drives in avocado and almond were what the college dorms had in my day in the early 1980s. They had been used nonstop around the clock, abused and massively overloaded...

A 1958 GE, brought back to life!

What are the three dryer Buttons for? We had the 1959 GE dryer. I remember the 1959 having only two buttons, start and air freshener. So wanting to know what the middle button did is driving me crazy. Gorgeous machines! The dryer was very fast and quiet. But the controls were awkward...

Julia Child - Later kitchen (B&W)

Speaking of Julia She was definitely a master at regulating the heat on an electric stove. Clearly she preheated her burners way ahead of time so everything cooked fast and she knew just how to gradually reduce the heat as she went so she got the exact result she needed every time without...

Julia Child - Later kitchen (B&W)

Oooooooh…. And in the link, there’s the drawing of Sunbeam’s fantasy for the 1950s housewife to covet: the ability to make breakfast — bacon, soft boiled eggs, toast and perked coffee — effortlessly with four Sunbeam appliances, all plugged in at the same time. One would have had to be a...

Julia Child - Later kitchen (B&W)

220 volt line Looked at the installation instructions and it must be connected to a 220 volt line. So probably, in the day, people installed those in older houses with old wiring to avoid blowing fuses with kitchen appliances. Very interesting!

Julia Child - Later kitchen (B&W)

Thank you! For years I have wondered what those panels on the wall were. It never occurred to me to ask. And I’ve never seen one of those! Seems to me that would be a complex installation. Surely it’d need to be hooked to 4 dedicated lines with separate circuit breakers or in those days...

On The Quest For A New Powdered Laundry Detergent

My choices Tide Original HE powder, readily available, and German Persil mega pearls, both Color and Universal. Cheer is available in powder form, usually available at Walmart, and I believe it does not have OB agents. (FWIW I have never been a big fan of the Cheer cinnamon-ish scent, and for...
