    Hoover 455 (A3072) Washer Overhaul Pt 2

I've never heard of a motor bearing kit. Back in the day it was quite cheap to fit a new armature but the big pre-logic motor armatures became obsolete some years ago. I had a machine similar to yours in my store for some time, waiting for a replacement armature, then one day I was out walking...

    Bosch V696 vs. Hotpoint 15792

Only guessing but without the "e" button in it might be filling with a mix of hot and cold whereas with it in it might fill with hot only. A 12 pound load for a machine of that era is quite unusual so unless you go for an American made Whirlpool toploader you are unlikely to beat it for capacity.

    Hoover 455 (A3072) Washer Overhaul Pt 1

I would have re-used the spider with some Loctite to glue the new bearing to the shaft. What detergent do you use? Liquids tend to cause more rot than powder.

UK survey: single men don't change bed sheets

I would agree that 2 to 3 months is gross but changing twice a week seems OTT. When I was young we had a bath once a week and that was fairly typical of British working class families. Now some people think it's essential to shower twice a day. Were all our ancestors disgustingly filthy, with no...

    super silent vacuum cleaners

It is a while since I used one but I think of the Hoover Junior and Senior as fairly quiet machines, probably due to the low wattage motors.

    House Brands

I always bought Co-op 99 tea when I lived in UK as I preferred it to the major brands such as PG Tips and Typhoo. It also had to be loose tea, not bags.

    Motor control Boards

If you are handy with a soldering iron you could make up a continuously variable speed control using one of the existing boards for the triac and heat sink. I made one for my father as a speed controller for his old '50s electric drill when I was a teenager. This circuit may not be suitable...

    Isn't It Sad

Yes, I used to get regular visits from the Homespares rep. Homespares mainly sold aftermarket, replica parts for appliances. He told me one week that they had been getting quotes from a firm in China to make washing machine door handles and other plastic mouldings. When the prices were mentioned...

    Mosquito mats use worldwide....

I have one of the lantern type devices but have not seen the mats. Mosquitoes have been such a pest here this summer I am seriously wondering if I should move house again, perhaps to a mountainous area. I do get a few that find their way into the house but most of my bites have been sustained...

    1920's British House Preserved

Paper In my time warp house they seemed to use brown paper from parcels rather than newspaper. Some of the floors were covered in linoleum and the brown paper was used to stop it from sticking to the floorboards. Often the parcels came from the big shops in Aberdeen and were sent to the village...

    1920's British House Preserved

My first house I bought in Scotland in 1997 was a bit like that and I did try to preserve some of the untouched features. For example, the hall was done with a paint finish made to look like wallpaper. The old lady next door remembered them doing that decoration of the hall during WW2. You could...

That GE one is wonderful! I seem to recall something similar in the odd episode of "Jeeves & Wooster".

    Range/Microwave Combo

No, everything else would work normally without the microwave function. You would need to make sure the door still fits well with its frame or it could leak microwaves. Ideally it would be good to test it for leakage after the cooker is installed.

    Mowing..

Gardening? Something I have sometimes wondered about concerns the use of the word "yard" in American English where we from UK would refer to it as a "garden". Do you also have a different name for work done in the yard, mowing lawns, trimming hedges, pruning shrubs etc. or do you call it gardening?
