My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

I'm probably stating the incredibly obvious... And maybe this is a rant... But vintage toasters--at least all the ones I've seen--were unfortunately geared for the dimensions of 20th century sliced bread. So that is pretty limiting. Bread that should work is still made--and might be made until...

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

Nice tape measure! As for Corning Ware, it's indeed another "forgotten" product. My mother had some, and I don't honestly remember her using it, except maybe to store leftovers in the refrigerator. But then she also mostly used the oven for baking. Oddly, she got into a phase of regularly...

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

    >I know they make stuff similar but I question the longevity of them. I question this, too. Certainly I've heard horror stories about modern percolators that only last a very short time before breaking down. Indeed, I've heard many such stories, and I guess I'd be more inclined to gamble on a...

    Aunt Jemima????

    >heck, I had knee surgery a few months back, and still cannot pronounce or spell the parts they removed.... They have to use mysterious words to keep the mysterious magic illusion working! Both for body parts, and also the tools and procedures they use. It just wouldn't be the same if they...

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

The Sunbeam-style salt and pepper shakers reminds that there are other things that have some function, but are styled to match some bigger item. One of the things that I really wanted once was a kitchen radio styled to look like a refrigerator. I think Westinghouse might have made these, and I...

    1952 Kelvinator Refrigerator

    >I think those old aluminum ice cube trays froze the ice cubes faster than the plastic ones of today. They should. The metal would conduct heat better, after all. We had metal trays growing up. They served well, but from my memories, it can be hard getting the ice out vs. plastic. At least it...

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

Thanks, Sarah! Those are cute! Now I want a set. (My rational side now says: You must be strong and resist, John. Must be strong. Must resist. Must be strong. Must resist. LOL)

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

    >about 1982 I bought her one of the new, large Presto Electric Frying pans, (even though her old one still worked after almost 25 years if constant use) My mother had a large Presto for many years--much wider than the common squarish electric skillets. Harvest gold, with IIRC a non-stick...

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

Sarah I've got a dumb question. In your second photo it looks like there is a mini Sunbeam vacuum pot to the left of the big Sunbeam. What is that? Is it just decorative? Or is there some functionality (e.g., sugar holder)?

My rare?/ hard to find vintage appliances

    >In my opinion, electric skillets are one of the "forgotten appliances" of an earlier era that really stood the test of time. Nothing, in my opinion, heats as evenly as a high quality electric skillet. Interesting thought about "forgotten appliance". I haven't used those words, but I have...

    Aunt Jemima????

    >of course Aunt Jemima, was Aunt Vag*na..... I have zero interest in Aunt Jemina products...but now I'm tempted to serve some to company, just so I can tell them this "creative" name!

Countdown To End Of Windows 7 Has Begun

It's interesting that since the topic of Windows 7 no longer receiving support as of 1/14/20 first came up, I've been noticing more and more commentary from people who are really unhappy with Windows 10, and feel it's a huge step back from Windows 7. Interestingly, some of these people are...

Countdown To End Of Windows 7 Has Begun

Actually, I like Microsoft's advice to buy a new computer, rather than upgrading an existing system to Windows 10. If people do this, that might mean lots and lots of cheap computers on the used market that I can buy and happily use for years after I upgrade the computer from Windows 7 to Linux.

    Direct Drive Country Music

I noted that this isn't the only video with this washer as an instrument. There are several videos on that channel. One video even outlines a modification that allows the beat to changed song to song:

WSJ Editorial Board: Make Dishwashers That Clean Again

    >I would love to see a real parts breakdown and reliability study of the various WP models It would be interesting. I can't qualify as any sort of expert...but I have thought that a more expensive appliance may not buy anything past more features. Performance and lifespan might not be much...

Safety covers for vintage gas stoves

    >dogless for 4 years now. Still miss our Rottie. It's difficult, being empty nesters now. I haven't had any pets in years. Part of me misses having a pet--I grew up with pets in the house--but there are so many practical problems with having pets... There is the cost, and the fact that a life...

Safety covers for vintage gas stoves

I enjoyed all the pet stories! I've never known cats who did some of the above (like ringing doorbells). But my mother's last cat was very much of a creative problem solver. The problem to be solved was--apparently--"What can I do to annoy the humans next?" LOL Actually, her problem solving...

WSJ Editorial Board: Make Dishwashers That Clean Again

Of course, there are ways of working around the problem of long cycle times for entertaining. One very obvious solution: if it was a huge problem regularly, one could get a second dishwasher. (Not that anyone here would want a second...or third...or fiftieth dishwasher. LOL)

WSJ Editorial Board: Make Dishwashers That Clean Again

I also have commented on long cycle times for entertaining. It's possibly valid to think of a situation outlined above of a family gathering where people might be recruited to do dishes. (Indeed, I've heard this before--one dishwasher detractor I know chirped cheerfully that the only time I'd...

WSJ Editorial Board: Make Dishwashers That Clean Again

I will never understand the hang up over cycle times I'm one of the ones who has commented more than once about long cycle times. My thought (and I'm not alone in this): I don't like leaving an appliance running fully unattended. I won't hover over it, of course, but I want to be around in case...
