    YouTube video

I tried to search on the site for this video to see whether someone had already posted the link, but I did not find it. Video appears to be an internal promotional video for 1957 Imperial Sheer Look appliances. http://https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyScWnz5rjo

Remembering Service Stations of the Past

I just noticed this today for the first time The sixth photo from the top, Sunoco Gas reduced to 26.9, is the northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Oakman Blvd, in or near Detroit MI. (I no longer remember whether that is in the city or not.) There's a picture from Google Street View of that...

We Haven't Had A Telephone Thread For A Long Time

When I was a kid in 1950s Detroit, there was service which allowed you a fixed number of local calls a month, I think the number was 90 and if you exceeded it the extra calls were proportionately quite expensive. So periodically when somebody got poor for a while and wanted to conserve their...

We Haven't Had A Telephone Thread For A Long Time

When I bought a new house in the booming northwest side of Tucson in 1978, the phone service was not keeping pace. I mean the poles with 6 lines or so per crossbar, five crossbars. We had Direct Distance Dialing, Sort Of. You could dial all the numbers (e.g. 1-517-3379712) but you were greeted...

Anyone Have A GPS System They Love?

Here's an update to my post of 1/21/2014 I posted earlier about the Garmin Nuvi 2597 LMT which had free lifetime map updates, but also had big blue blobs indicating various retail establishments which I could not get rid of. Well, yesterday that Garmin told me that it had become a year old and...

    Can anyone identify this thing?

I have to agree about the base It looks exactly like the Simax chicken roaster. There are no brand-identifying marks on either the base or the lid. The lid has a particular construction in that it has an annular trough at the bottom of the domed part, that is why the diameter is so much greater...

    Can anyone identify this thing?

I bought it on eBay several years ago. At that time, it was discussed in a Usenet group in which I participated. They had suggestions about what it could be but nobody was certain. I had occasion to move it from one closet to another recently and so I decided to have another try at identifying...

    Huevos rancheros

We went to Bread & Butter for lunch today... I ordered Huevos Rancheros and enjoyed them quite a bit. I can't eat those other items any more. I wonder if you were in Tucson before that strip center was built, when the cafe was in a tiny stand-alone building on the corner of 22nd & Bryant? (the...

    Typewriters

Eyes On The Copy Our elderly but kindly high school typing teacher admonished us all the time. Typing class for me was as a freshman. We randomly seated ourselves the first day, and those became the assigned seats for all year. The guy sitting next to me became my good friend, and remained so...

    Old Fashioned Country Style Steak..

Help me out here I just recently acquired an electric skillet so I have no experience using it. What temperature setting, in degrees, do you (any of you) use to brown the steaks and if it is different what setting for cooking them in the gravy? Thanks.

    Front loader bases

I bought pedestals with drawers For my Big-Square-Door Kenmore front-loaders circa 2005. They are situated on a concrete slab. Once in a while an off-balance spin will make the washer creep one way or another but in general there is no problem I can detect with using the pedestals.

The Frigidaire Appliance Design Center in 1957!

That silver dome at the GM Tech Center The dome is a theatre/auditorium. Several times when I was a kid in the 50s I got to see films in it. These were the incredible, boosterish, great-big-beautiful-tomorrow shining-at-the-end-of-every-day things but I cannot recall any certain one.

    Typewriters

blue and white Royal Safari This is the typewriter which my parents gave me as a high school graduation gift. I still have it in the back of a closet somewhere, but I have not looked at it in decades. Also stuck in the case are some sheets of onion skin paper, and a few packs of "Co-Rec-Type"...

What appliance co did you consider best years ago..

My parents when they were first married and both working (late '40s) bought quality stuff. GE AWS6 washer. Frigidaire refrigerator. (don't know the model but it had the 2 cu. ft. freezer hanging from the top, and the tilt-out bin at the bottom) Sunbeam mixer. Toastmaster toaster. Tappan gas...

Is anybody getting their television "off the air"?

OTA works as long as... ...there are signals that may be received. I bought my house in 1978 in the then-booming northwest Tucson area. Broadcast TV antennas are on the mountain north of town, pointing south. I live west of that mountain. Few signals fly my way. I had a big antenna on a...

How do you add second & subsequent images? Here's what I saw when I tried: the "files queued" button is greyed out, that's where the "add" button had been.
