Rebuilding an early 90s Direct Drive

Progress! Got the shaft seals replaced, and I never want to do that again. Put two coats of por-15 on the center post and mounting stem of the inner tub. I forgot how much I hated painting with por-15 because of how the lid fuses shut to the can once I open it for the first time. Almost have to...

GE washer/dryer set model age quality requested

I have a FF model WWA8320. I absolutely love it. I would love to upgrade to at least a model 8350 so that I could have the mini basket. Standard "large" capacity is 2.8 cu ft iirc. Extra large capacity is 3.2. Same as the Maytag standard and large capacities. Whirlpool built DDs are 3.5.   I...

Which decade was Maytag’s very finest?

It's a shame about that gold washer. If it had a lighted console, then it was definitely an A806, or whatever was the TOL model at that time. I honestly doubt it was tub rust that caused the leak, because those Maytag tubs very rarely rusted through. The spin drain helped keep the surface clean...

Which decade was Maytag’s very finest?

I would have to say the 70’s. Very similar in design and style to the 50’s and 60’s, but all the minor improvements Maytag made over the years really added up. One of my dream washers is a harvest gold 70’s A806. I fully rebuilt, used for a while, and later sold a 1987 A512. Absolutely loved...

'70 Maytag A806 oil leak - What do I do next? Please help

Lower o-ring <blockquote> <span style="font-family: helvetica;">"He stated that the lower O-ring should never fail.  He state emphatically that it fails because the lower bushing has gone bad (he stated from the motor rollers go bad and put undo lateral stress on the lower trans housing).  He...

    Free Maytag

“Kentucky is too far from Indy?” I lack the ability to travel that far for something like this. If I had my own truck to haul this back home with, I totally would, but I have to rely on family members for help, who are completely unwilling to travel with me any farther than an hour...

My Amazing 1974 Lady Kenmore Washer

I am so jealous. That is an absolutely beautiful set you have there. A belt drive LK is one of my 3 dream sets to own (the other two being a Maytag HA806 and GE WWA8350 filter flo). Hope that set gives you many many years of service!

'70 Maytag A806 oil leak - What do I do next? Please help

Brake removal tool I have been looking for one of those for years now without any luck. I wish you the best of luck in finding one. If you don’t, just use vice grips on the edge of the brake assembly as a makeshift wrench.

    Free Maytag

Looks like an 806. That’s my dream washer, but of course it’s too far away for me to get. Hopefully someone else can save this beauty.

'70 Maytag A806 oil leak - What do I do next? Please help

My guess is you need a new lower lip seal.   https://www.partselect.com/PS2017479-Whirlpool-207843-Transmission-Lower-Lip-Seal-Repair-Kit.htm?SourceCode=20&SearchTerm=A512&ModelNum=A512&ModelID=235544#ModelCrossReference   Do you know how much oil has leaked? If it's a lot you might wanna...

Rebuilding an early 90s Direct Drive

A new spin tube and tub support would cost around $400 total. Maybe if this was a TOL set that I could sell for close to $2k (matching washer/dryer), but that’s just not worth it on a BOL set like this.

Rebuilding an early 90s Direct Drive

Good news and bad news New center post seal came in! Bad news is it wasn’t the source of the leak. Shaft seals are bad. Pictures 2 and 3 in reply 4. The center post itself is also a little rusty and has a lot of paint chips and exposed metal, so it needs to be repainted. Even worse news is the...

    A Potential Find?

Power Flex Agitator? Now I am familiar with most of Maytag's lineup until the Dependable Care launched. After that I don't know anything besides my own LAT4914. What is the Power Flex agitator?

Rebuilding an early 90s Direct Drive

Quick update So the new center post seal is supposed to get here on Friday. Had some free time so I went ahead and started cleaning up the inner tub. Managed to get the lint filter off without breaking it, so I’ll be able to reuse it. Also was finally able to get the drive block out of the...

Kenmore Washer & Dryer $50 Hillsboro MO

“They have been sitting unused in a basement for a few years. They worked when my grandparents quit using them. I did a quick test on them and the washer wouldn't drain. They are heavy, but the basement is a walkout that you can back right up to, so it won't be too bad to get them out. $50 OBO...

    need motor switch for maytag

Ok that’s good. Fill it up full of water and make sure it works. If it does, then you’re all set. As for your LAT8650, it’s possible the nylon gears in the orbital transmission are stripped and need replacing. Pieces from the gears could be jamming up the shaft from turning. Try to turn the...

    need motor switch for maytag

Could I just fill it with a bucket? Yes. When I’m working on a washer I don’t have a separate washer hookup to use, so I just fill the tub manually with a garden hose. Test it full of water before swapping the switch. If it works, then you may not need to swap it.

    need motor switch for maytag

Yeah if you could barely turn it at all with the new belt then you can’t use it. Just leave the old belt on for now. Get the belts properly tensioned and put the centrifugal switch on it from the LAT8650, then hopefully your GA310 will be working fine again. These old Maytags very rarely need...

    need motor switch for maytag

Reply 24 Does the tub turn at all when you turn the transmission pulley? The inside of that LAT8650 honestly doesn't look nearly as bas as I thought it would. I would still clean it out as best you could though. I love old Maytags and I'd really hate to see one head to the scrap yard. refer...

    need motor switch for maytag

Belt slipping The motor is on a carriage that moves back and forth with springs keeping tension on the belt. This isn't just to keep the belt properly tensioned, it also acts as a clutch to protect the motor from being overloaded. When the washer goes into spin, the motor needs to get up to...
