    Please don't do LSD

Psychedelics really aren't in at the moment. For some reason, today's blasted young people prefer to drink themselves blind, puke in a patently inappropriate location, and drink some more. Personally, I've never dropped acid and have no plans to. It's not a moral thing. I just believe there are...

    Equal Opportunity Offender! Beware!!

You want offensive? Are you SURE? What's the difference between acne and a Catholic priest? Acne doesn't come on your face 'til you're 13.

    Compact?

I'm in the process of cleaning out/closing up my mother's house (and finding a new place to live, but let's not even go there!), and one of the interesing things I found was an early-'70s Compact Electra canister vacuum. It's a bullet-shaped contraption, avocado green aluminum, with a...

    Your potato salad?

I've actually got a big bowl of potato salad maserating in the fridge right now. Call me a heretic, but I hate celery and don't use it in anything I cook. I start by boiling the potatoes and eggs with a few peeled garlic cloves (adds a subtle little something). My dressing is mayonnaise, a...

    Braun shavers.. the BEST

I used to have a Norelco (I think) 3-head electric shaver. My face hair grows in fast and thick, and eventually it clogged and broke the poor thing. Currently I'm using an old-fashioned adjustable razor with a double-edge blade. Very close shave--just don't press too hard!

    vintage appliances on TV

And now for something completely different There is a Monty Python episode where Mrs. Premise and Mrs. Conclusion (John Cleese and Graham Chapman) discuss "how to put your budgie down" in a laundromat full of turquoise Speed Queens--lots of top-loaders and one big dryer, brand name clearly visible.

    "Sew" obscure

Sorry, can't post a pic (no digital camera/scanner). Googling was the first thing I tried; all I could find was a few vague mentions that the machines existed, i.e. "Someone gave me an old Emdeko sewing machine, how do I thread it?" I did try eBay, and while no one is selling the sewing machines...

    "Sew" obscure

Nope, I have no idea where it was made, just that Emdeko took "great pride and gratification in the comments made by thousands of users. Some of the comments stated regarding EMDEKO are, 'So simple to use'. 'So quiet and smooth'. 'So completely trouble free'. 'Everything I want in a sewing...

What did you eat on Easter?

Had dinner with an aunt and uncle. Spiral ham, smoked kielbasa, and my contribution, cornflake potatoes (a diet-buster casserole I save for special occasions).

    "Sew" obscure

Has anyone here ever heard of Emdeko sewing machines? My mother had one, which I'm going to give to a friend. It's maybe '70s or early '80s, with zig-zags and bells and whistles, but I can't find out anything about the brand. The cover of the instruction manual: "EMDEKO. The woman's choice. Sew...

    The Importance of a Hairdo

Hey, hon, you got any Spray Net? The last great, dramatic hairstyle I saw was four years ago: a bleached-blonde winged airlift, flipped just below the ears, sported by an older woman in a restaurant where I was having lunch. Unfortunately, "mall hair" is still with us--tease it straight up...

Cooking under pressure: In avocado of course

I have a 4-quart Mirro-Matic (late '50s-early '60s, to judge by the model number) that I would be lost without. Great for any meat, chicken, mashed potatoes, etc. My favorite pressure cookbook is "Pressure Cooking is Pleasure Cooking" (1977). The new books aren't really for me, what with their...

    Classic car question

My Taurus has about 150,000 miles on it and has just gotten a new air cleaner (shouldn't stall now, but we'll see) and $400 worth of brake work that I'm still paying off. I inherited it from my father, who bought it in early 1996. It's definitely driveable, but I never liked it, even when I was...

    Classic car question

Thanks, everybody, for the info. I'd love to get this car, but it's apparently being sold by people who never answer their phone. It's not restored, but it looks to be in really good shape. The apparent defects are: A cracked grille (chromed plastic--glue) A 2-inch rust spot on the hood (can...

    Classic car question

Well, today my '95 Ford Taurus stalled on a busy highway, but since I never cared for the blasted thing anyway, I'm gonna start looking for a new car. My goal is a small economy box-on-wheels (I like to crank my windows; it's exercise) that's dependable and easy on gas. I have found a used car...

    Thanks

I just want to thank you all for your kindness and support after my mother's death. I'm okay now, much more together, staying busy, etc. For a few days I was really crazy, and it helped knowing people are thinking of me. Thanks again.
