    New Speed Queens

Has anyone used the new Speed Queen home models? I stopped at an appliance store to scope them out and they seem rock solid, like Maytags used to be. I was trying to get more info out of the salespeople, but for some reason they kept trying to shove a Frigilux FL at me.

    Frigidaire dryer POD 7/7

I don't know a lot about Frigidaire dryers, so please forgive my ignorance. Is anyone familiar with the model that "needs no plumbing or venting"? Is this a condenser dryer?

    London Bomb Blasts

Oh my God, this is horrible. My deepest sympathies to all our friends in England.

    ge vs. whirlpool vs. maytag

If you're set on a new model, definitely go for a Whirlpool product. They're durable and they work well, even though the wash action isn't as dramatic as it used to be. Better yet, why not look in the used appliance stores for a classic? Maybe you could find a real Maytag or a belt-drive Inglis.

    Drying Temps-What do you use?

The place I'm currently living has a late '80s Kenmore Soft Heat dryer. Typically I dry towels on cottons/high and clothes on permanent press with the automatic cycle. At the laundromat I always use the highest heat to get the clothes dried fastest.

    The Golden Age of Washers-Comment

Maytags I've used classic workhorse Maytags in the form of coin-ops from the '70s and '80s, and I think they do a really good job without beating the clothes. Oddly enough, I was the only one in the laundromat to actually fill the washer to capacity while properly distributing the clothes. The...

    Sensi-Temp burners

The house where I'm currently living has a 40-inch GE range from the '60s. I'm sure it was TOL before the "bonus" parts (rotisserie, meat thermometer, Sensi-Temp Grill) disappeared. Still, it's perfectly useful, except for a broken support on the back burner and the Sensi-Temp burner, which...

*jaw hits tabletop* When you look like that, bravery has nothing to do with it!

    Bennett Bros.

Saw something very interesting at a used bookstore yesterday: A hardbound copy of the 1964 Bennett Blue Book. It was out of my price range, but I had a lot of fun paging thorough it and seeing just how old my vacuum (Hoover "Deluxe Portable") and kitchen utensils (Rival Ice-O-Mat manual ice...

    Bewitched Marathon

From everything I've heard, the Bewitched movie isn't worth seeing. Personally, I have a low tolerance for Will Ferrell in anything.

    Texas Visitation

Cute little pocket pets! When I was a kid I had two teddy bear hamsters, one right after the other, named Hamlet and Lucky. I also remember my grandmother having a budgie that she hated and would keep covered all the time so it wouldn't make noise. According to family legend, Gram also sprayed...

Pillow cases: how often do you wash 'em?

I used to have a very loving and devoted tuxedo cat who slept in my bed with me. Of course, one morning when I was about seventeen I woke up in a bed full of cat vomit. My mom has a rambunctious LhasaPoo (half Lhasa Apso, half poodle) that had an "accident" on her unguarded bed. In her words...

    Vintage TV's, a new hobby?

Rounded screens I've always wondered about those screens with the rounded corners (or the porthole screens on certain '50s TVs). Is the picture distorted to fit the screen, or is it cut off at the edges?

    1961 Oldsmobile Super 88

That is one beautiful automobile! I guess 18 mpg is good, considering it's the size of a small yacht. The thing I drive is only 10 years old and needs $400 worth of repairs...maybe it's time to switch to a classic.

any other vintage "fan" lovers ?

I saw a really neat Sears box fan from the '70s at the Goodwill. It had two knobs, one for fan speed and one for "cool" control. I don't know how this would've worked. Unfortunately it was out of my price range.

    Paint & Perma-Prest

I'm very angry at my landlord/roommate. He's painting the bathroom in an "ocean theme," which means there is blue acrylic paint from one end of the house to the other. Somehow a spot of it ended up on my poly-cotton flares, and it won't come out. I tried hand washing. I ran it through the...
