    Switches/outlets/wiring devices

when I redid my house, I actually used a NOS Despard plug and switch in the kitchen for the main light with a vintage bakelite switch plate (brown). Looks real cool. And yes, you can still get brand new Despard switches and plugs, including three prong outlets.

    Under counter outlets for island

Suds, If you don't believe us, do this. Kill the power to the house and take the dead front off the box. Take each circuit breaker out one at a time and inspect the buss. There's a better than 60% chance that your'e going to find scorch marks and evidence of overheating.

    Under counter outlets for island

@sudsmaster, as a final note, many insurance companies will not insure a house with an FPE panel.

    Under counter outlets for island

@sudsmaster, As an FYI, NO FPE breakers/panels are safe. New production still carries the same basic faults as the older ones. Listen to what we are saying. GET RID OF THAT BOX, especially if you have a family/kids. It's not worth risking a house fire and their lives. After the second near...

Who Still Watches a CRT Television?

I retired my Magnavox 25 inch color tube set from 1972 in 2007. I so miss that set, the color, the picture depth, the contrast and black level blows my 55 inch flat screen to Hell. I was getting tired of having to pull it down every year for maintenance, and oh the joys of 6GH8. (Some here...

    LED Replacement Christmas Bulbs

Yeah, don't get me started on pink 1950's C7 :-/ I can't stand purple/blue LED Christmas lights. They literally give me headaches. To me, they appear to have a purplish halo around them, and it doesn't matter the brand. C7 replacements ARE readily available online, and if they are faded out...

    Christmas in April!

As a heads up, on the red/green strands, if the wire has turned dark and stiff, they are no longer safe to use. Repairs on the bakelite sockets (reattaching the loose wires) can be done, but it is an iffy proposition at best. On the set with the red ring around the base, do not, under any...

Sleeping with a fan on, anyone else?

Thanks all. That Diehl is nice but it has some problems. The body is made of pot metal and it's in terrible shape. I've replaced the headwire so hopefully I won't have to open the case again, it should be okay if it's not messed with anymore.

    The "black beauty"capacitor phenomenon...

LOL, When I rewired a building that had knob and tube (ACTIVE!) wiring, I probably could have made a fortune selling that wire (and the ceramic connectors and the 1920's dust of course) to audiofools. ;-)
