    Life Changing Microwave discovery

I have an old Revereware Microfryer that’s aluminum and was designed to be used in the microwave. It looks basically like a normal frying pan, with two small handles on each side instead of a long one on one side and it has a heavy glass lid. I’ve never personally used mine in the microwave, I...

New to me cold water wash suggestion

I’m not inherently grossed out by the idea of cleaning wine glasses in cold water. It’s alcohol after all, I mean it’s not like a cup of milk my kids have been drinking out of. I don’t think wine glasses are a hot bed for bacteria. That said, I’m aghast at how much work is being put into...

Does Anyone Still Use A Fax Machine?

I used a fax machine countless times every day when I worked at a hospital. I used it to fax admission orders to central admissions, medication orders to the pharmacy, discharge information to the post-hospitalization physician, and entire charts when transferring patients to higher level...

What to do with old Quilting, Sewing and Crocheting books

You could call around to local high schools or middle schools to see if their home economics teachers would be interested. Maybe even local churches or Girl Scout groups. My grandmother taught me the basics of those skills but church youth groups and home ec cemented them for me and the books...

Got a box of Tide powder detergent...

I use Tide Powder for the vast majority of my laundry. Along with a scoop of Oxi Clean so I don’t bother buying the Tide with Bleach. I really want to switch to the unscented version but I can’t find it in anything but the smallest boxes which is a very impractical way to buy detergent for me...

    Wood breadboard care.

Use a food grade oil designed for wood cutting boards and you should be fine. Just make sure the surface is clean first and use very little oil, allowing time for the oil to soak in and then wiping off any excess before you use it next.

    Pyrex Revisited...

I have had far too many pirex dishes shatter on me over the years. I always blamed myself for doing something wrong because they broke after being taken out of the oven, I thought I wasn’t letting them cool down slowly enough. I finally had one literally explode IN the oven and I was done. It...

    Putting Up Preserves

I can things from my own garden. Around here it’s extremely common still and every fall you see women getting together and having marathon canning sessions. Canning supplies are also very common wedding gifts. I love having food that I’ve grown available to me throughout winter.

    Kitchenaid's new ceramic mixer bowls!

I’ve had glass and ceramic mixing bowls break on me while using them with hand mixers. I now only use stainless steel bowls with mixers and use my ceramic bowls for serving. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with a ceramic bowl on my Kitchenaid.

How good are Hobart kitchenaid dishwashers?

I don’t mind running the dishwasher at night but most meals require two full loads so it’s very important to me to not have a dishwasher cycle take too long. I’m not staying up late just to start the second load after dinner and I’m not leaving dishes in the sink to fester overnight and attract...

Help me Make an Informed Decision re: a Washing Machine

You are in a similar conundrum to myself, I had a thread in Imperial recently about my own issue. My 20 year old DD Whirlpool recently stopped working and I have been unsuccessful in finding the correct replacement part. I have four kids and my husband and I both work in fairly grungy...

    Any sewists?

Don’t bother with a ‘toy’ sewing machine. I actually don’t have very favorable things to say even about $100ish machines sold nowadays but if you’re just trying it out and planning to upgrade later it’s probably fine. You could also try to find a used machine. I got very lucky and found an older...

Timer went bad on my washer

Would a newer, commercial SQ be a good solution for everything I want out of a washer? Are there any known issues with them?

Timer went bad on my washer

Is there anything I should look out for when looking at washers in person? Any red flags or warning signs? And, is there anything I should absolutely stay away from or something that if I find, I should absolutely jump on?

Timer went bad on my washer

Well maybe what I’ll do is make a trip to Boise to go to some of these used appliance shops in person. From the Craigslist ads I’m finding, there seem to be quite a few and they look to have decent offerings. The local appliance shop focuses mainly on repairs and has a very limited inventory at...

Timer went bad on my washer

I’m in Idaho Falls. Craigslist listings are sporadic here for appliances, so I’m looking mainly in Twin Falls, Boise, and Salt Lake City, Utah. I talked to the local appliance repair shop and they have a washer identical to my current broken one that they’d sell me for about $150 but I don’t...

Timer went bad on my washer

Well age and condition are definitely factors that I’m concerned about. The Speed Queens you posted have me intrigued but being in Boise, the same limitations apply for having to buy it sight unseen. I really just want a reliable and long lasting machine.

Timer went bad on my washer

Any thoughts on this washer? It looks decent but I would have to buy it over the phone and then travel to pick it up so I can’t look at it in person before I buy it. https://boise.craigslist.org/ppd/d/nampa-fantastic-almond-kenmore/6816876569.html

Timer went bad on my washer

I know of Speed Queen’s claims of reliability but how much truth is there in those claims? Are they easy to work on and get parts for? I’m comfortable with the direct drive offerings of WP because I feel like they’re a safe bet but the issue of not being able to find a timer has me concerned for...

Timer went bad on my washer

My Whirlpool, manufactured the sixth week of 1999, just had the timer go out.I knew it was going, two of my cycles had already stopped working and now it’s not working at all. I’ve been looking for one but have been unsuccessful since the part is discontinued (WP3953545). Now I need a working...
