    Amana Radarange microwave

As long as these RR's can pull the current they need (no extension cords or undersized wiring) they're pretty quiet when under load (nice, heavy transformers). The fan speed might drop just a little, and the interior light (if on) will dim a touch as it cycles, but normally that blower will...

    Amana Radarange microwave

Just to clarify, the fan/blower should run anytime you hit Start, and normally would drown out any transformer hum. In fact, the hum really shouldn't be perceptible whether or not the magnetron is "on" or "off" during defrosting.

    Amana Radarange microwave

Auto-Defrost The defrost cycle on these models is a 50% duty cycle if I recall. When you activate it, it powers a motor and a cam turns the magnetron on for so many seconds (30?), then off for so many seconds. It's not unusual for there to be a light clunk or hum (transformer is under load)...

    Amana Radarange microwave

She looks right at home in that kitchen! Due to the integrated-choke door design, it would take physical damage to the unit to make it unsafe to operate. I wouldn't put too much stock in that hand-held tester, to be honest. The next time you're cooking something, look up towards the splash...

    Amana Radarange microwave

Sharp eyes will notice RR-2 style graphics on those 4D knobs. This is because the 50Hz models came out in the '2' era, and since the timer motors are 60Hz, you actually get a little bit more cook time on both timers due to the motors turning slower. I don't know how many EU models were sold, but...

    2 Prong Small Appliance Cord

I believe you can still buy those 2-prong cords news, even the heavier wattage version, but due to cost, most manufacturers have gone to an integrated design.

    Amana Radarange microwave

Looks like a very nice RR-4D! You'll find a small door at the top rear to access the bulb externally. On the US-spec models, the bulb is a 2-pin, 25W bayonet style. Any chance we can see a close-up of the dials?

    Missed a GE combo

I thought I posted a message here about these back when I snagged them 3 months ago(!), but perhaps it was on the FB AW group? Either way, I'm surprised they're still trying to sell that wall oven. The house is/was a beautiful MCM custom that's getting gutted; the combo was actually still hard...

    Mounting Canopy for Light Fixture

I think I'd find a canopy I liked and use a nibbler tool to cut a hole for one of these snap-in receptacles. I did something similar years ago to my medicine cabinet so I could charge my razor with the mirror closed...

Season 2 Episode 2 Hazel New Turquoise Philco Appliances

Too funny.... I was making a few repairs on the ol' TV when Hazel was showing off the new fridge. Never got to see the front of that dishwasher, though.

    1960's Nutone Fan

I second the comment on Ace Hardware. See if you can gently pry out the old one; many of these are friction-fit. Measure the hole diameter and you're off to the races!

The return of a trusty old friend!

Congrats on bringing her back home! Looks like some new chips in the top porcelain? I reached out to Jeff at Independent Porcelain a couple months ago regarding sunny yellow and unfortunately he says he no longer supports that color. I guess a search for a replacement top might be the only...

    Youngstown Kitchen's Dishwasher

I sure wish I was closer! (12 hour drive from IA) Just last week I picked up the twin to that 30" Youngstown. Unfortunately, mine has some porcelain damage inside the door near the hinges. Between the two I bet I could make one nice running unit.

    Who made the “deepfreeze”?

That reminds me...Swestoyz picked up one of the later ones like in the top pic, though it was still pre-Amana. Built like a tank, beautiful chrome, and a temp signal light. I believe he ended up parting it out.

    Who made the “deepfreeze”?

Yessir, Motor Products Corp. And still running like a Swiss watch. I know Travis has the double barrel version. While a cylinder is tough to stock, you end up with essentially 100% cold-coverage.

    Mailboxes vs slots

Talking with a friend recently who lives in Germany, he was curious what the little red 'flags' were on our mailboxes. Apparently, household mail pickup is unheard of there.

Living dangerously in a Wonder Kitchen

On first blush it looks a bit scary, but the water's in the backsplash, the sink is continuously formed into the countertop, and the countertop is (well, is designed to be) grounded. I think you'd have to work pretty hard to get water into that load center. An old ungrounded fridge, or vintage...

    1977(?) RR-8 Radarange

The RR-8/8A's are about as sophisticated as you can get for an analog unit. The Cookmatic slider can be adjusted on the fly and the temp control allows for probe cook & hold. Amana had also learned a few lessons from the RR-7 so these tend to be pretty robust. Definitely worth $50.
