I throw everything in. I don't use cast iron, so I don't worry about that. Pots, pans, plates, cups, wooden spoons.....It all goes in together and it always comes out clean. I have never had anything ruined by the dishwasher. Even stuff that says 'not dishwasher safe' does fine. ~Tim
