d-todd, this is an inverted Pal Nut. The proper too/driver, fits on the inside of this nut, which is often use to attach volume, treble, bass, etc. to a metal chassis.

When Kenmore's started sporting a similar control panel, (along with many other manufacturers like GE) it did indeed look incredibly cheap, something for which the Kenmore-branded Whirlpools were not known.

d-todd, most folks aren't familiar with the tool or the inverted hex nuts on which it is used.

How about an internal hex pal nut driver? It's used to remove those special nuts that hold knobs onto chasses.

My then partner and I bought a Norge made Wards washer & dryer in the mid early 1980's. They had beautiful styling, and the washer did a great job of cleaning my dirty work clothes. The dryer was very fast, but due to its positive air flow, was very linty.
