Found out something about Whirlpool direct drives....

We've had 2 DD's in the past, and the observations here about the pitches of the two pump types are dead on. Also, our newer DD was less likely clank through neutral drain into spin.

    Tide Tiles

Maybe P&G and other detergent makers have started making these, because apparently for some folks, the usual pods look so appetizing to eat. At least these "paks" don't have the edible lure of the pods.

if you had a laundry room like this what vintage washer dryer would you put and what color?

    I'd choose a 1970's GM Frigidaire 1-18 washer, and matching wide-mouth dryer.

    Exploding washers... SMH.

One thing I never do is leave an appliance running and then leave the house. I'm not a "set it and forget it" type of person anyway. I've had a modern GE dishwasher catch fire while my late husband and I were sleeping. So, I won't use the delay cycle and go to bed either.

1953 whirlpool, today’s picture of the day, energy star

My mom said the best suds saver washers were wringer washers. She would start with hot water with bleach for all of the cotton whites, which included white towels. As the water cooled and the bleaching action was gone, subsequent loads of clothes in the same suds would be washed. When dad bought...

New Old Stock Montgomery Ward Dishwasher Sandusky, OH $30

IIRC, the first Montgomery Ward built-in dishwasher was made by Waste King. My aunt had one and I could tell it was a stripped-down version of the Waste King, as it lacked a pre-wash and automatic detergent dispenser.

    "Sound based popcorn function"

I have a newish Panasonic microwave inverter oven. My niece sent me a gift of a Pampered Chef microwave popper. The problem was that the instructions advise to not use it in an inverter-type microwave oven. So, it just sits on the shelf above the oven, waiting to be used a Christmas party...

Slow, long stroke agitation versus short, fast stroke

As a person with OCD and Asperger's, I couldn't resist bypassing the lid switch on my DE806 washer. It was supposed to hold an 18 pound load, but when I did that, it would barely roll over once or twice. A load of sheets would hardly roll over at all, as sections of them would stay above the...

Try the "The number you have reached . . ." trick on your answering machine.

I was able to get those three tones recorded onto my answering device. My message follows in ascending loudness, and in my sister's voice: "The number you have dialed, is not a working number; The number you have dialed, is not a working number, The number you have dialed is not a working...

Mode shifters vs solenoids, an actuating question

I grew up in the 50's. I remember well the loud, banging solenoids of machines back then. It was almost as if Speed Queen and Maytag AMP had a contest to see whose washer could scare a family pet out of the room. Oh, and let us not forget the Norges for their equally loud parking brake solenoid...

Norge Coin Op popped up in Australia!

In my home town of Pocatello Idaho, a Norge laundry and dry cleaning center opened up in the fall of 1961. Our Maytag AMP had just bit the dust as it was never reliable or trouble-free, even when it was new. As a family, we would haul our laundry and dry cleaning down the the Norge Village once...

    Hooray for Hobart

Here's another ad showing a Hobart-made dishwasher for home use. It is interesting that it has a reverse-rack configuration.

    Question

Does anyone know if Electrolux dryers still make that whistling sound? Years ago we had an Electrolux set and our dryer could be heard along our block. My brother had a Frigidaire set and his dryer also whistled noticeably.

    Dimmers and LED bulbs

When I swap my incandescent light bulbs for LED ones that indicate they are dimmable, I find that they either don't dim very much, or that they flicker. I have even changed the dimmer light switch to ones that also indicate they are compatible with LED bulbs. Is my experience common, or could I...

Really old gas dryers -- where were the pilot lights?

My first laundry duo was a 1969 Maytag 806 washer and matching gas dryer. The pilot access door also exposed the main burner. I often wondered about roasting weaners on it while the dryer was running.

    Hooray for Hobart

My dad owned an Italian restaurant. It had one of those huge Hobart commercial dishwashers where one slides the rack inside after rinsing the dishes. It had an aggressive wash cycle and an sanitizing rinse cycle. IIRC, the rinse water was hot enough to evaporate when the dishes were slid out the...

    Hooray for Hobart

Well, the ad I saw said "for the home." So I thought Hobarts were again being made for residential use. I may have misunderstood what they meant.

    Hooray for Hobart

Hobart is again making dishwashers for household use. Hobarts LXN undercounter series look like they have a tweak on reverse rack technology, but it's hard to tell from the photos. This is so good to hear after Whirlpool bought the KitchenAid division of Hobart, and turned their dishwashers into...

    Australian-made Simpson "Fluid Drive"

I always wondered why more manufacturers didn't use a fluid drive, AKA as a viscous drive, instead of a dry clutch. To me, it seemed like a perfect way to allow needed slippage in the first part of the spin cycle.
