    Nationwide gas stove ban?

Foraloysius said:   "Back then more children were breast fed and more children were exposed to childhood illnesses so their immune system was built up better. "   Good point!   I'd love to have a vintage Wedgewood range. But I'd also replace any standing pilots with spark igniters ASAP...

1950s caloric 40" double oven help

"Skelgas" appears to be a brand name for propane.   Stoves set up for propane probably have a different pressure regulator than those set up for natural gas.   I *think* natural gas, which is mostly methane, runs at a higher pressure than stoves set up for propane. That's because propane...

1950s caloric 40" double oven help

It's a beauty!   What exactly do you need to know, if anything?   Gas stoves are fairly straightforward, after all. Although I'd look into upgrading the pilot lights to spark igniters, if possible. I think spark igniters became mandatory on new gas cooktops and ranges around 1979. Although...

    Bosch vs Vtg KitchenAid Dishwasher

The kitchen in my house of the past 25+ years is also open to both the living room and the dining room, as well as to the family room, which I have set up as my home office.   It wasn't built that way in 1941; originally the family room was a bedroom, and all four rooms were closed off by doors.

    Bosch vs Vtg KitchenAid Dishwasher

I've had a Bosch dishwasher for over 15 years and aside from having to replace the pump, it's been great. Clean dishes are a must; if a vintage unit doesn't do the job properly, then I would recommend a Bosch.

Nationwide gas stove ban?, Part 2

Yes, the shake roof has seen better days.   However, I went up there a few years back and replaced any shakes that were deteriorated. I still have spare shakes left over from that. Looked at it yesterday again (from the ground) and a few need attention. But it's my understanding the main...

    Tupperware is at Target

I rarely use plastic Tupperware or similar stuff. Instead if I want to put some leftovers in the fridge, I use glass Pyrex containers of various shapes and sizes, brand name is Snapware. The lids are plastic, but generally they don't contact the contents.  And the glass doesn't exude nasties...

Nationwide gas stove ban?, Part 2

Let's see. Here in my home of the past 25+ years, I have:   1) Gas cooktop 2) Gas furnace 3) Gas water heater 4) Gas clothes dryer   As I recall, I replaced an electric cooktop and electric clothes dryer with the gas versions. In all cases my reasoning was that matural gas is uniquely...

Where to find a Frigidaire Jet Cone washer

Back around 1965 we lived in a flat in SF. The landlord lived upstairs, we lived downstairs. There was a Frigidaire Jet Cone washer in the first floor garage area. It was explained to me by the landlord that his wife didn't like it, so he "donated" it to the other tenant(s).   I found it...

2009 KA SxS Fridge Has a Case of the Hiccups

Ralph,   My KA Superba fridge is also in a cubby hole, but I only roll it in about 19 inches. Since the fridge is approximately 31 inches deep, that leaves about a foot extended forward, which is fine by me. In this position it's about an inch further than an adjacent doorway, and the...

Ralph,   Your KA fridge/freezer is not unlike my circa 2000 Kitchenaid Superba SXS fridge/freezer. It's worked great for two decades.

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

If I'm not mistaken, it's been primarily just one person who drove this thread into the ditch, repeatedly.   That said, I like my gas cooktop in the main kitchen, and am intending to replace the Frigidaire electric range in the patio kitchen with a spark ignited Modern Maid gas range. I've...

    Washer That Maintains Temperatures?

The Maytag <span class="pdp-tray-model-code">MHW5630MBK front load washer has an internal heater so I imagine it could maintain hot water throughout the wash cycle. Plus, it has a dual temp feature, where the wash starts out cold to remove stains that are best removed under cool temps, and...

New in Crate GE RA -949

Bob,   The round shape of old dishwashers probably had more to do with the thinking that since the wash arms went in circles, then so should the cabinets be circular. However this seems to have been a wrong conclusion, as modern dishwashers with square cabinets, inside and outside, do just...
