Not So Fast re: "Banning" Gas Stoves

When I bought this place in 1997, it had a Corning glass electric cooktop. It showed bad staining under the glass, and was on its last legs. I replaced it with a Frigidaire "Gas on Glass" cooktop, and have never regretted that move. I kept the electric oven, which is on another wall of the...

    Bosch vs Vtg KitchenAid Dishwasher

As I recall, my first dishwasher some 25 years ago was a Kitchenaid. It failed in a couple of years and I replaced it with a Bosch. The Bosch has been running fine ever since.

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

Well...   I lived in Berkeley for about 13 years.  Back then if anyone had proposed banning natural gas, it would have received a lot of "Huh?" responses.   More recently I replaced the funky electric cooktop in the main kitchen in this house I bought south of Berkeley back in '97, with a...

IDK, I kind of like the stains on the pink border.

Trying to lift stain from vintage silk scarf

Is it possible these purported stains are part of the original design?

    Ungrounded Outlets

Well, went to Home Depot and picked up my copy of  "Wiring Simplified". It looks good.   If I have a complaint, though, it would be that the type is a bit small. Not so small that I need a magnifier, but sort of on the edge.   Anyway, I'm wondering if the original edition was in a larger...

    Frigidaire Refrigerator Explodes

Tom,   Of course I know how to search something on Google.   Do you?

    Ungrounded Outlets

Technically speaking, the 10-50 and similar 240 volt receptacles are NOT fully grounded. This has been explained elsewhere in this thread (I think). For the safest ground, a separate path for the ground is needed; the 10-50 and similar outlets compromise this with the neutral wire. It's no safer...

    Frigidaire Refrigerator Explodes

Also, just took a peek inside my KA SxS fridge. It contains R134a, which is a type of Freon. According to my Google search, R134a stopped being mfg in 2021, although existing stocks can be used to service older equipment.   I think!

    Frigidaire Refrigerator Explodes

Well, I used to be a chemist of sorts, and I'd have to research what involved in making methamphetamine, but that part sounds like it could well have contributed to the danger.   OK, just googled it. Here's a summary of meth lab hazardous chemicals:   Acetone/ethanol: highly flammable. Red...

    Frigidaire Refrigerator Explodes

Some of the responses say it's because of new refrigerants other than Freon are actually full of hydrocarbons (like propane) and can explode. One reply says hang onto your old fridge.   IDK, I'd have to do a little research on this. But my 25 year old KA fridge works just fine. Still.

San Francisco Bay Area phasing out NG furnaces & water heaters by 2029

Yeah, I'll just stick with the gas fueled central heating system here for the foreseeable future.   I did a pretty good job insulting the attic about 24 years ago.

    Grocery Shopping in 1971

This thread reminds me.   I need to go grocery shopping on Monday.   Usually it's Costco. Sometimes Safeway.   Recently defrosted the chest freezer, and since then have been digging through it and am now working my way through older frozen stuff I forgot I had. Found a large ham in there...

San Francisco Bay Area phasing out NG furnaces & water heaters by 2029

Just need one clarification here.   When you say the furnace will work down to -15... is that Fahrenheit or Celsius? Because there's something like a 32% difference between those two energy measuring systems.   I would like to assume -15 means Celsius, because -15 Fahrenheit would be much...

Household trash compactors vs plastic bottles

Just got a reminder from the local city trash service what is OK to put in the recycle bin and what is not ok to put in there.   Not OK:   Plastic takeout dishes Plastic bags/wrap/film Chip/Snack packaging Bubble Wrap Styrofoam blocks Pet waste (who the fuck would do that?)...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

It's nothing short of ridiculous to claim that a discussion of replacing gas tools with electric tools cannot also include the concerns about the origin of the electric power for those tools.   And for that kind of discussion nuclear power is extremely appropriate. As is solar power...

    Ungrounded Outlets

Well, that's a big outdated, no?   In any case, I placed the order, but still waiting for word from the store that the order is ready to be picked up. I suspect it won't be ready until Friday morning. We'll see!
