johnrk I agree with you about that issue of consumer reports, Aug. 1960. I also found it quite interesting that most of the different brands of machines were basically same in design from the TOL to the BOL models. I also found it interesting that Westinghouse models were reported as having...

    The New SQ TL Washers

top load machines? There will probably ALWAYS be a few top load washers produced because there will always be people who will hold out against change and/or there may be certain unusual applications and places where a front load machine will not fit in. That being said, there is really NOTHING...

This looks like the beginning of the new design Philco washer that washed with the rubber finned agitator. This machine looks like a TOL model and those had all the bells and whistles that came with it. This design washer was rated on the same level as Norge in the late 50's which was the top...

    Norge wringe washer in action

Yes Christina my love, it does indeed have the holes in the skirt like the newer Norge machines do with the angel wing agitators. This agitator even has holes in the agitator fins too.

The POD set was obviously from the late 50's and employed the new design transmission and mechanism that Hotpoint used in their washers up until they became rebadged GE machines. The dryer looks to still be an older design that they changed later to a solid tub design drum. They had not yet...

Frigidaire changed their design from 1960 and the 1961 washer and dryer were both 27" wide. The washer had a somewhat larger tub and the dryer was made to vent out like most other dryers of the time. They did make the dryer pictured here that was self contained and did not vent out, but it...

    The New SQ TL Washers

johnrk The front load set I have is from Sears. It is an LG made Kenmore set that holds a tremendous load and/or any king size bedspread or comforter. It saves me EVER going to the laundromat again for which I am truly grateful. It also does an excellent job and does it using less energy and...

    The New SQ TL Washers

agiflow2 In answer to your first question, yes, probably so. It would seem that a shower would do the same job with much less water usually. But people are going to do what they are most comfortable with. All I am saying is that on a basis of getting a job done well, the new front load...

    The New SQ TL Washers

Folks, unfortunately for some of us, time does march onward. Everything changes and whether good or bad it is a fact of life on earth. I just try to make the best choices I can with what I have to make them with. I truly don't have a problem at all with my new front load machine. It really...

This is the nicest looking of the AMP series Maytag washers made up to that time. As it states, you have the tub within a tub and both spun letting the water out at the top like the solid tub machines. As consumer reports pointed out, sand and sediment would get trapped in the outer tub and...

    The New SQ TL Washers

The one thing I would really like to see is a pic of the inside of the new machine, agitator and tub.

Would you consider D&M machines legendary?

IMO In my opinion, the D & M dishwasher that deserves legendary status would be the models they made one year which introduced the top roto rack with spray under it, but still had the impeller for the bottom dishes. That is a very rare bird indeed.

This machine loaded from the top, but was similar to a front load machine in the way it washed. It also had to be bolted to the floor much like the old bendix machines. It did actually rotate in opposite directions, but the washing action was still poor and spin was not that good either. They...

The most popular detergent along with one of the most popular automatic washers of the time. Looks like a 1956 Norge washer. My folks had a 1957 pair that looked similar to this washer. The washer did have a separate water temp dial for the wash and rinse. Norge made a washer that did a very...

Dash was a pretty good detergent. It was a low sudser like All, but cleaned well and smelled good. High sudsing detergents were actually hard on your washer. The excess suds would cause the motor overload switch to kick out and suds lock along with other things. It was interesting that people...

It all goes back to personal preference I guess. I personally have never liked Westinghouse front loaders and found them to be much less than most other machines as far as washability and water extraction. They were useful for me in the commercial laundry though, for small dark loads of shirts...

GE's claim to fame and selling propaganda of the mid 50's thru the 80's was the "Filter Flo" system. It did seem good to pick up loose hair and some lint, but how you sort your laundry has more to do with linting than anything else. The GE washers of the 50's were fairly noisy, but did a good...

Someone who worked for GE told me that Hotpoint was the "cheap" line of GE. Just saying... It did seem odd to me, since in the 50's and 60's Hotpoint had totally porcelain finish cabinets and GE never did.

Well......I have used several of these machines over the years in a commercial type laundry to wash and starch jeans, pants and dark color shirts mostly. They worked quite well for that too I might add, but held significantly less than a larger capacity top loader, such as a Frigidaire 1-18 or...
