today's front loaders You can adjust the level control for the water on today's front loaders, if that is what concerns you about them. Today's front loaders do an incredibly good job of cleaning, rinsing and spinning out anything put into one and most of them hold easily twice what one of...

The time must have been the mid 60's and after Westinghouse introduced their newly designed top loader. These sets were right about the same time and were actually smaller in size and capacity then the old style slant front machines that Westinghouse had made since the 40's. The stacked units...

    Tub Escape

items escaping over the tub This happened in many of the solid tub machines and in some perforated machines as well. It depended partly upon how well the manufacturers guarded against that and in some cases if the machine was overloaded or had things that tended to float washing in it. I know...

Can you tell ?? what kind of vintage washer someone has by looking at their clothes?

I will say this much about vintage washing machines. Most of them did their job much better than the direct drive and other fast, short stroke washers of more recent past. Even the GE washers made from 1961 on had more aggressive agitation that created lint and wear on clothing. Case in point...

Oops! Guess I was a day ahead of myself! Anyway, this Hotpoint/GE made machine was right after they quit making the solid tub Hotpoint machines. It operated the same as the rest of the Hotpoint/GE washers. This model looks to be an upper MOL model that pre chooses the water temp and speed...

Question what would be the advantage of a used washer compare to brand new

used machines The only older sets I would actually trust as a daily driver would be a Maytag set from the 80's to 90's that was an authentic Maytag mechanism. To find a set that was used little and in great shape would be terrific. I am sure there are some still out there if you look. Other...

Kenmore/Whirlpool dryers were always about the best you could get. Kenmore seems to have been the fancier of the two, with more bells and whistles. This model is no exception to that. This looks to be from the late 60's-early 70's. There was also a plug for Sears permanent press clothes.

We had one in Tulsa, Oklahoma too for a brief time back in the early 70's.

    POD 10/25 Question

The first Frigidaire washer I ever saw operate was a pulsamatic 1957 model. I was mesmerized by it at about 7 years old. I am not sure the type of dryer this machine had, but it matched the washer which looked much like the other 1957 pedestal timer machines. The dryer that went with the one...

Most common brand of vintage washing machines

Hands down, the MOST popular washing machines and dryers EVER made from the 60's thru the 90's were definitely Kenmore. They were in more homes than any other machines. There were once upon a time, Sears stores everywhere and with the generous discounts and sales they continually had, the...

This machine was before they added the spray arm on the top. It was still a pretty good machine, all things considered. It did take some care in what you put on the bottom rack, so not to completely block the spray from getting to the top rack. It did have the constant rinse sprayer on the...

    Sucker for Coppertone

combo52 Heh heh heh, I remember that spiral agitator too. Only one I ever saw in a Norge made machine. From what I recall, the spiral agitator I saw was in a "Tempmaster" Norge made machine that Otasco used to sell.

The most dependable, easy to use, no nonsense machines ever made are pictured here. The capacity was not the largest, but was just slightly under the largest capacity machines and the standard capacity was as large as any standard capacity washer. They were VERY dependable and lasted many many...

This Hotpoint washer was middle of the line and typical of the machines Hotpoint was making in the 60's and 70's. They did an adequate job of washing, rinsing and spinning clothes. They were not outstanding, but did the job. Somewhere around the time this washer was made, Hotpoint started...

Blackstone is one machine I have never had or worked on. I don't think they were popular in my part of the country. I think they were fairly well known in certain areas though. I also think that most of them had a porcelain top instead of stainless steel. I did see a laundromat full of the...
