    Betty Crocker's New Cake Mix

I’m somewhat puzzled by cake mixes.  A plain yellow cake is so easy to make, it seems odd to buy a mix that requires eggs and butter.  The only other ingredients are flour and sugar.  Half the work of making a cake is buttering the pans, a task I really dislike for some reason—and the box does...

    Pear Pie

There’s a great old English dessert called “Eve’s Pudding”, made with apples (get it?).  Instead of a crust, there’s a cake-like batter that goes on top.  It’s easy to make and really good.   A few years back, I made it with pears, and I think I may like it better that way.  We call it...

Hobart Meat Grinder. In Woostah, Ma.

I avoid Demi Moore films at all cost, so I can honestly say I missed that little gem.  IMDB ranks Motel Hell a lot higher, which is kind of sad.

Hobart Meat Grinder. In Woostah, Ma.

Vacerator, the movie you’re thinking of is Motel Hell (1980).  It’s mediocre camp with an overlay of weird horror and organic, locally sourced cannibalism.  It’s like a drag-queen version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), but it falls far short of the mark.    *** SPOILER ALERT ***  ...

    Front/rear/side driveways

Our 100-year-old neighborhood had alley access to every house at one time, but most alleys were closed in by backyard fences over time.  I wish we still had our alley, but we don’t.  Our driveway is narrow and we share it with our neighbor.  The driveway slopes down sharply, so the parking pad...

Is a more expensive crockpot (slow cooker) worth it?

As I understand it, Rival invented the crock pot as we know it, and theirs have always performed the best for me.  I’ve worked with a Cuisinart and it was not as good as my $50 Rival—it was smaller and very heavy, and of course over $200.  I do like the newer Rivals with the time controls, which...

Frances Gabe, Creator of the Only Self-Cleaning Home, Dies at 101

“Perhaps it was her penchant, at least in her younger days, for doing her yard work in the nude.”   I didn’t see that one coming.

    Another Scam

All our friends know that we do not answer the phone until we hear their voice talking into the answering machine.  That approach works quite well.  We don’t even need caller ID, which has become basically useless.

    everhot roaster 745 series A

That Everhot name makes me think of the tea sets from Britain.  Is it the same company?  Surely not, but they were also a mid-century brand.

    Cook-O-Rama! Part Two

Be sure to let us know when it’s available.  I would certainly buy a copy.

    Cook-O-Rama! Part Two

What a fascinating cookbook that will be!  I already want to try that sandwich spread!  Have you ever seen the recipe for heating cocktail weenies in a crock pot with grape jelly?  Grapes and pork-product must have been a popular combination at one time.   The spelling of the word ‘tvaroh’ is...

    Cook-O-Rama! Part Two

In response to a post in part 1: quark, tvorog/творог, syr — all of these are fairly common in Atlanta.  I would think that cottage cheese would not quite fit the bill; it certainly isn’t very sour, and it has curds that are much like actual cheese.   I love tvorog on a bagel, just like cream...

Recipe Search: Carnation Evaporated Milk Used With Cake Mix

While it’s true that evaporated milk really took off in the Depression, I think it was shelf-life and shelf-stability, rather than cost, that made it so important.  The government was trucking this stuff all over the country to people who needed it, and there was no way they could have done that...

    James Beard: America's First Foodie

I do have that book, and I absolutely loved reading through it years ago.  It really was a fantastic book.  It was 20 years out of date when I got it, and it would be over 40 years out of date now.  But I wonder, how much has really changed in all those decades?  The only new (legitimate)...

Turquoise Frigidaire Custom Imperial Wall Oven Dishwasher and cooktop

Admittedly, any used item is worth only as much as the next buyer is willing to pay.  And of course these old appliances have their own little problems that are not easily solved.  But it’s hard for me to see a set like this and think that it’s overpriced.  I could take $1600 with me tomorrow...

Turquoise Frigidaire Custom Imperial Wall Oven Dishwasher and cooktop

Is $1600 a high price for that set?  Four matching items, all but the sink in excellent condition—what is the price supposed to be? [this post was last edited: 3/22/2017-22:17]

    Making hard-boiled eggs

Boiled eggs in the gravy at Thanksgiving are something that I have only seen occasionally, and only from Southern cooks.  It seems like an odd idea.  It add some texture, I guess, but no flavor that I could notice.

A Gallon of Water to a Pound of Pasta: A Cooking Myth That WILL NOT DIE! (and a BONUS RECIPE!)

I use a lot less water for pasta now than I used to.  With heavy pots and a vintage Frigidaire range, I don’t have any trouble getting the water back to a boil after the pasta goes in.  I actually love boiling water on an electric range.  Sometimes I try to think of a recipe that needs a pot of...
