Happy 19th Birthday to my Whirlpool Duet Front Load Washer

Congratulations and a very belated happy birthday to your Duet pair. I’ve never kept a washer for its complete natural life because I always get “new washer fever” and want to get something new to play with. I admire your loyalty to your Whirlpools.

    4-11, 8-track tape day...

I was a teenager during the 8-Track’s heyday. I remember how some albums had to be radically re-sequenced to fit the time constraints of the format. It really messed with the artist/producer’s intended flow for the album. Have fun celebrating 8-Track Day and as you can see by my choice of...

Stain Tests: Tide Evo Tiles; Tide Ultimate Stain Release; EC30 Tiles

Just dawned on me that I didn’t take a photo of what the “before laundering” towel looked like. This is one from a previous test, but I stained them all identically, so it will at least give you a good idea of what the tested detergents were up against. Coffee Stain: I dampened that corner of...

Stain Tests: Tide Evo Tiles; Tide Ultimate Stain Release; EC30 Tiles

Overall, the two laundry tile products cleaned these ridiculously tough stains almost as well as top-rated liquid Tide Ultimate Stain Release. I’ve used both the EC30 tiles ($1 apiece) and the Tide Evo tiles ($.45 apiece for a box of 44) on regular loads with great results. The detergent tiles...

Stain Tests: Tide Evo Tiles; Tide Ultimate Stain Release; EC30 Tiles

The box of Tide Evo Laundry Tiles arrived, so I stained a dish towel with the same stains used in the EC30 Tiles and liquid Tide Ultimate Stain Release tests, then let the stains dry overnight (about 10 hours). Used the same cycle as the other tests: > Speed Queen 7009 front-loader; very soft...

1980s Liquid Tide laundry detergent jug

Good luck with your search, Jason. A detergent jug of that vintage has to pop up sooner or later. The jug shown reminds me a bit of the cars of the early 1980s: more angular than, say, vehicles of the 2000s. Today’s detergent jugs are more softly contoured.

    Tide Tiles

Here’s the ingredient list for the EC30 tiles, which are also made by P&G. We can compare the ingredients list of the Tide Evo Tiles when they arrive. My hunch is the two will be very similar.

    Tide Tiles

They’ve arrived on the market. Initially read they wouldn’t be available nationwide till June. Ordered a box of them from Walmart. I’ll replicate the test done with the EC30 tiiles/swatches and we’ll see how they compare in cleaning and stain removal. As I’d hoped, the Tide Evo tiles are...

the liquid and the powder cycle

I thought someone in the AW family—Launderess, perhaps—said that liquids were generally better for greasy stains and powders better for dirt/clay stains. I recently switched back to powders, a format I hadn’t used for years. I do use liquid Perwoll for black clothes. I wear a lot of black.

    Popular sandwiches from the 1950s

I have a recipe for hot tuna sandwiches. Tuna, some chopped hard-cooked eggs, shredded cheese, a jar of diced pimientos, mayo and seasonings. Like you, Eddie, I didn’t think I’d like it, but it’s in regular rotation at my house. I ate too many Reubens over St. Patrick’s Day, so I’m over them...

    Popular sandwiches from the 1950s

I’m still a big fan of the double-decker Club Sandwich and make one at least once a month. Had one at a Woolworth’s lunch counter when I was eight—because I liked the photo on the menu—and it’s been a favorite ever since. And there are rules: Must be a double-decker; each triangular section must...

    Vintage Food Advertisements: Part Twenty-two

Always have and always will enjoy these vintage food ads, Louie—especially the ones with recipes. That tray of canapés made with A1 sauce in reply 21 looks awesome. Thanks for continuing to find and share all these great ads.

EC30 Detergent Swatches (Tide Tiles) vs. Tide Ultimate Stain Release

I decided to create a thread about the tests I’m doing with EC30 detergent swatches vs. top-rated liquid Tide Ultimate Stain Release. The swatches are made by P&G and will be marketed as Tide Evo Tiles sometime later this year. The Tide Tiles are being test marketed in Colorado beginning in...

    New Refrigerator GE GTS17GTNKRWW

Thanks for the comments, everyone! Personally, I rank refrigerators—at least one as simple as mine—fairly low on the “appliance excitement” scale, but I’m enjoying the modest upgrade in features compared to the previous fridge. I know it’s odd to purchase appliances when one is renting an...

    Tide Tiles

Robert- I happen to have a jug of top-rated liquid Tide Ultra Stain Release, so will replicate the test—same stains, same cycle (Normal cycle, warm water, max soil setting providing a 50 minute wash tumble)—and compare the results. My gut tells me the Tide Ultra Stain Release will remove more...

    Tide Tiles

lakewebsterkid- I debated how to wash the load of whites with the purposefully-stained towel and decided to go with the same cycle used by a testing organization that we love to hate. The Normal cycle also provides the longest wash time (max of 50 minute wash tumble) that doesn’t force you to...

    Tide Tiles

I put the EC30 swatches/tiles to the test this morning on a medium-sized load of whites. I stained a dish towel last night, which you can see in photo 1. The stains dried on overnight. The Test: > Used one EC30 detergent tile. Added it to the tub of my SQ front-loader, then added the clothes...
