well I am a big fan of suds machines. Once in a while, I'll throw a few of the dirtiest items in when there's just barely enough incoming water, to get some real thrashing when needed, but it's wisest to wait for a full tub of water or nearly so. Suds saver washers are economical, great fun.

My Folks had a 1960 home with the lower model, just the dial with no buttons. It did a darn fine job until around 1974, no complaints.
