POLL: Dishwasher Door - to latch or not?

always latched. Clean or dirty or empty, the dishwasher is always latched here because my 1 year old nephew comes over and heads right for it every time to see if he can get it open so he can play with the rolling racks.

paint stripper Skip the citrus stuff, its useless. Stripping paint really does require you bring out the big guns. Ace hardware sells a generic brand of strong chemical paint stripper that works very well.

    Oatmeal Pie

I hadnt thought about it, but you named it exactly. It tastes like a pecan pie with a soft oatmeal cookie topping. Lol. As for the family reunion, well.. it isnt what it used to be, the turn out is a quarter of what it was in the early 90s when we used to rent the elementary school...

    Oatmeal Pie

quick cook Yes, I've always used quick cook oats, I don’t know if old fashioned oats would work or not. It really is yummy, and no worries about nut allergies either.

oil / grease stain Never fail remover for oil and grease, WD-40. Saturate the area, let it sit a bit, then start scrubbing with hot water and a good detergent (dawn works wonders), and rinse rinse rinse. I would use a shampooer or shop vac to suck out the nasty soapy water as I went. For...

For Better Or Worse It Is Mine - GE Mobile Maid

epoxy repair Your repair job should hold up for a long time, about 6 months ago I found a 1970s frigidaire dishwasher in lovely Avacado Green, to complement my stove. There were holes rusted out in that thing that I could put my finger through all the way to the other side. 2 days spent...

Can you use non-stick spray (Pam etc.) on 70's Teflon?

well.. They do say Pam spray damages teflon, however I use it anyway and haven't found any adverse affects other than discoloration. On the other hand, a teaspoon of butter in each well should make the eggs slip right out as well as adding a lovely flavor.

Recent Finds..The old The ODD the unusual!!!

flex seal These are the best pressure canners ever made. I have one identical to yours except mine is a stove top model rather than electric. They were made during WW2, when aluminum was in short supply, and are enamel over steel, so are totally non reactive unlike most pressure cookers and...

When do you add detergent to the washer? Before or after the clothes?

My aunt and I were discussing this subject yesterday. Turns out we do it completely opposite to each other. I learned how to do laundry in Granny's set of Kenmore automatics, and always load the clothes loosely to the top row of holes in the basket, add my powdered detergent directly on top of...

About as BOL as it gets.

I like old school BOL Back in the day BOL didn't have as many options and features, but it was simple, and worked just as well as the TOL models, being just as well built. An older BOL washer might not have a delicates, knits, or perm press cycle, but it's one cycle and one water level did...

Welcome back to 1974, my kitchen redo

durability You shouldn't have to be anymore careful with the counters than with regular laminate counters once the polyurethane finishes curing, which takes about a week. During that week the polyurethane isn't quite as hard and does scratch easier. The great part is its like hardwood floors...

help with a 1950s GE freezer latch

I have an ancient GE chest freezer, it originally had a chrome latch handle, in order to pull the lid tight for a complete seal. At some point in the past a previous owner removed the handle, so now I get frost build up around the opening. My freezer is identical to the one in the image...

Welcome back to 1974, my kitchen redo

Actually I did check that route, lol. Unfortunately everything I have read says that the epoxy re coats aren't very durable. They seem to be recommended for situations where you want to make something look presentable for a year or 2 while you save money to remodel, or make something look...

Welcome back to 1974, my kitchen redo

washing machine The haier front load combo went out in a blaze of glory, literally, lol. The board malfunctioned letting some of the wiring burn up. It went straight to the scrap yard, and now I have a Kenmore portable, from the late 80s, currently it's set up permanent in the bathroom next...

Welcome back to 1974, my kitchen redo

close up of the counters. Here you can really see how well the counters turn out. So far everyone who has seen them has thought I had new counters installed, lol. All that's left to do now is lightly sand and polyurethane the lower cabinet doors, and replace the vinyl self stick floor tiles...

Welcome back to 1974, my kitchen redo

All done with paint. I took the storage door off the stove and had my local hardware store color match the paint, then painted the fridge, freezer, and walls. I also got new replacement knobs for the stove in black, and touched up the few enamel chips. I used a quart of krylon pumpkin...
