    Ungrounded Outlets

I guess I am lucky here because this 1941 house was remodeled sometime in the 1960's or 70's. At that time one of the bedrooms (2) was converted to a family room, with a washer dryer closet,  and another bedroom was added to the rear of the home, with its own bath. All the 120 outlets in the...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

Sean,   Well, a push reel mower is not maintenance-free. The blades need periodic sharpening, for example. But I agree is a lot more environmentally friendly than either a gas or an electric mower.   It IS more exercise, and takes longer to do the same plot of grass. Push reel mowers have...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

Another way to produce hydrogen gas is to run an electric current through water. This in turn will produce both oxygen and hydrogen gas. I remember doing this in a chemistry class years ago. https://www.energy.gov/eere/fuelcells/hydrogen-production-electrolysis

How likely are you to convert your car to Electric?

Here in California the electric rates have skyrocketed in the past few years, and I understand they will continue to rise. So while an EV might be economical in other parts of the nation, here I sort of kind of doubt it will be any less expensive than a gas powered car.   Unless one gets solar...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

From my experience, batteries are fine for lower power applications. But when push comes to shove, for major energy needs, there's nothing like a gas powered garden tool. As an example, the other day I used a battery powered lawn edger. It worked fine. But when I tried using the same motor for a...

    Garden hoses galore

What Costco carries is generally above average quality, so I've been buying from there for the past 30 or so years.

    New refrigerator. Quietest?

OK, I didn't realize the thread police were active on Saturday.   However, I imagine the old GE fridge would be reasonably quiet. Like I said, I've never plugged it in to check on the sound, at least that I recall. I probably plugged it in when I got it home, just to make sure it still...

    House listing in Ann Arbor

$315K would be a big bargain in California. Most homes here go for over twice as much these days.

San Francisco Bay Area phasing out NG furnaces & water heaters by 2029

Personally I think the ban on natural gas fueled home appliances is absurd. Natural gas fueled home appliances are far more efficient than gasoline fueled automobiles and trucks. Natural gas burns far more cleanly.

    New refrigerator. Quietest?

A couple years ago I was visiting a friend on the other side of town. There, someone had put an old single door GE fridge out on the curb. I thought about it for a few minutes, and then said to myself, "What the eff?" and loaded it into my van. Still haven't plugged it in, though.   It's...

San Francisco Bay Area phasing out NG furnaces & water heaters by 2029

Also, if I'm not mistaken, in the case of natural gas fueled home heaters, such as in my home, the heat from the burner is sent up into a sort of heat exchange, where it is transferred to recirculating indoor air. So there shouldn't be any contamination of the home air with the byproducts of...

San Francisco Bay Area phasing out NG furnaces & water heaters by 2029

"Phased out" is an inaccurate term. Existing natural gas fired water heaters and furnaces may continue to be used indefinitely, until they break down and can no longer be repaired. It's not as if anyone is coming around to demand these things be replaced with electric versions.   I imagine...

    New refrigerator. Quietest?

I should add that the file shows the KA SxS fridge failed after less than a year (2002). However the warranty covered that, a repair guy came out and fixed it, and it's been trouble-free ever since.

    New refrigerator. Quietest?

My Kitchenaid SxS has also been very quiet. Pretty much the only noticeable noise it makes is when the internal ice maker dumps ice into the bin. But that's been deactivated since last fall, and frankly I don't miss the ice.  I suppose I'll reactivate it once outdoor temps get toasty enough...

Be a Good Mixer: Part Two

I have a similar KA Mixer, albeit in white, not copper. Had it for at least 25 years.   Probably gives much the same results, although not with the same level of glamour.

Be a Good Mixer: Part Two

Tell the truth, I can't remember the last time I used a mixer of any type, hand held or bowl & stand.

    ~100 Year-old Underwood Standard No. 5 Typewriter

My mom had an old Underwood typewriter a lot like that in the unfinished second floor of the house we lived in until I was 11. I remember playing around with it but I was too young to know what I was doing. Later in high school I took a typing class, which I really loved. It's been all downhill...

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

I suspect that our Jerome doesn't quite get the more efficient and less wasteful action of a front loader. The rotating horizontal drum lifts the articles out of the water and then dumps them back in, repeatedly. This uses far less water and detergent than a typical top loader. It may also be...

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

I switched to a Maytag Neptune about 25 years ago and have never looked back. I did accumulate a collection of other washers, but the only one of those I've been using has been a Miele front loader. It's in a building with no water heater so the internal heater works out well.
