The older style stem seal used grease inside the 0A4298 seal. This is generally where the grease comes from when the seal fails. I bet this washer could easily be fixed with a stem seal and boot kit along with a tub bearing.

Galvanized pipes weren't used in 1988 unless the builder was extremely shady and paid off the inspector. I know Speed Queen uses water in their balance ring. Perhaps it's leaking? Anyone know if they tint the water a yellow color?

That's a good score for $100. 3 speed motor, Ultra Rinse, variable water level (which the SQ does not have) and all of the water temp options. Wouldn't be surprised if it outlasted the SQ, especially the control board.
