What Temperature Is Your AC Thermostat Set To?

77 now; sometimes it's on 76 or even 75 depending on activity levels. I recently visited a friend for the weekend. He normally keeps his AC at 75, which is fine, but he was gun-shy because his sister demands it be put on 68 when she stays there. I kept telling him it was okay, but he was so...

Kelvinator fridge compressor very strange symptom!

Double Cola is headquartered in Chattanooga, and got its name because you could get 12 oz. for the price of a 6 oz. Coca-Cola. My dad joked that it was because it caused twice as many burps as Coke. Anyway, it’s a niche product these days, although you can buy it in grocery stores around here.

Kelvinator fridge compressor very strange symptom!

Thanks for taking the time, David! Seeing that unit, including bottle opener, brought back some fond memories of country stores. Is this the same compressor Kelvinator used in their domestic fridges and advertised as the Polarsphere?

It's Official - Tide Free & Gentle Powder is Gone for Good

I made one of my rare visits to Walmart a couple of weeks ago, and was pleased to see they had Tide Ultra Oxi powder. It may have TAED now, but it works as well for me as previous formulations, and the scent is not too bad on clothes. I did put the powder I’m Mason jars to keep the entire...

    Detergent digital swap meet

I did some of these exchanges a dozen or more years ago, and as Launderess says, the shipping was brutally expensive. I can’t imagine how bad it would be now. But in case it’s helpful, Adam, one of my Aussie correspondents said that he could get Tide powder at Costco, I think in Melbourne. So...

Art Carney Advertising Stewart Warner Refrigerators

I believe Stewart-Warner sold off its fridge operation to Admiral after WWII. Some may remember the Admiral Dual-Temp as the first combination refrigerator-freezer on the market, but Stewart-Warner had introduced it originally.

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

Also of note, a large peer-reviewed study published by the National Institutes of Health found as follows: "We detected no evidence of an association between the use of gas as a cooking fuel and either asthma symptoms or asthma diagnosis." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24429203/

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

Everybody can unclench. No ban is on the table, just investigations.

    Trading Stamps

I’ve got a GE kitchen clock that my mom got at the S&H store. I’ve used the method supplied by RP2813/Ralph to keep the rotor from grinding. All it needs now is a new cord. When I told my nephew we got the clock with Green Stamps, he asked if that was “a government program.” Heh.

    A/C gone bad

Hi Glenn, yes, I have a two-stage modulating gas furnace also. There was no discussion of keeping the old thermostat since it was an old round Honeywell with a mercury switch and obviously unsuitable. Thanks for the advice, Wes. I talked to the owner's son who seemed surprised that I had a...

    A/C gone bad

All very useful, thanks.   I will probably call the installer, but am struggling to figure out how this could have been an innocent mistake. And if not should I deal with them at all.

    A/C gone bad

I'm afraid so. I've double checked serial numbers: American Standard 4A7A7036A1000 is a two-stage AC. I feel like a chump now. I assumed that the installers would install a compatible thermostat, but you know what happens when you assume...

    A/C gone bad

I see, thanks. It appears the HVAC company that installed mine gave me a thermostat (Honeywell T4) that does not even have a provision for running a two-stage compressor, i.e., no Y2 terminal. Unless there's something I'm missing!

    A/C gone bad

That's a nice reduction in electric usage. This may be a dumb question, but how do you tell what stage the compressor is running in?

1930's Grunow fridge with Carrene refrigerant...

This is fantastic, David! That compressor is a real tank. Did it eventually get the box down to the right temperature? The Consumer Research Bulletin annual dated September 1936 listed the Grunow Model 54D in the "Recommended" category, but gave the list price as $194.50--a lot, considering a...

1 Year Later with new KitchenAid kitchen

I noticed the slight smell on dishes from the Kirkland pacs also, and easily decided I'd not use them again because of that. I even considered returning them to Costco, but managed to get through the whole tub. I thought the point of Technology Connections' videos was that dishwashers actually...

    Dryer vents

My dad had the bright idea of heating the garage in the winter by rigging a kind of diverter box with a flap to direct the dryer exhaust into the garage. You guessed it: So much moisture condensed there was water running down the walls and the inside of the garage doors. And of course everything...
