Dave Agreed, but for the normal run of the mill housewife or husband that isn't mechanically inclined the Maytag is a far better machine. It actually washes, rinses and spins out better too. If it were me buying one of that era, I would probably go for the Kenmore since I would be able to...

Yes, BUT the Kenmore would NEVER last as long as the Maytag without having to service it. Kenmore was a good machine, but the belt did wear out and the pump as well. Maytag seldom EVER had a problem with either and would run infinitely longer than the Kenmore would. I always found...

That might not seem much these days, but in 1979 it was probably about as much as the additional money you would have to pay to get a Maytag machine vs. a GE or Whirlpool. So it was significant for that time. You also would be getting the best machine that money could buy. Although being only...

    Good washer and dryer

I have to admit, that washer is even tempting to me! It will probably outlast all and any new machine today! The tub might be smaller, but those machines were workhorses! It is the same machine my grade school had in the cafeteria in the 60's that was used several times daily.

    Good washer and dryer

Any Maytag washer made in Newton, Iowa is going to be a good machine. I have had both the long stroke agitation and short stroke agitation machines and both worked quite well. The longer stroke promoted less linting and probably did a better job at cleaning, but the short stroke one did quite...

    Good washer and dryer

reg I might add that screwing in the leveling legs ALL the way in before starting to level the machine will help greatly too. The closer a washing machine is to the ground, the more stable it is. The further the legs are screwed out, the more spindly and unstable it is.

Put a 3 in front of the 2 years old and that is closer to the age of this machine.

    Good washer and dryer

reg If you get a Maytag set you will find you have a terrific set of machines that will last you a long time. I have NEVER had a Maytag that walked either. They have an automatic cut off for unbalanced loads that shuts off the machine. Maytag washers are among the most level, even spinning...

I guess in Canada it is a whole different ball game when it comes to appliances and brands.

Westinghouse presented their newly designed top loading washer around the mid 60's. It really was a nice heavy built machine that washed very well and got dirty grimy clothes clean. It rinsed and spun out fairly well too. If memory serves me correctly, at some point they shortened the final...

I absolutely agree, D & M used to make the dishwashers for Kenmore among others. They even had the Roto Rack sprayer under the top rack on the models right before switching from an impeller to a spray arm in the early 60's. Many of the other dishwasher manufacturers had either upper spray arms...

    Good washer and dryer

True, the problem with vintage washers and dryers is that something 50 years old many times can have brittle seals and rubber parts and parts for those machines would be difficult to find.

    Good washer and dryer

Well, Maytags are much easier to service, should you need to and the tops are porcelain enamel, which is not always the case with some of the Whirlpool later models. They are heavier built too. A belt drive Whirlpool or Kenmore might not be bad, but they are much harder to service and more...

    Good washer and dryer

In my humble opinion, you should look for a Maytag set that was made in Newton, Iowa. They seem to pop up everywhere now and again and many are in excellent shape. They were some of the very best machines ever made. The ones made from the 60's-90's are good units and will serve you well. My...

    1979 Whirlpool dishwasher/ portable

Yes, I would think it had the Whirlpool design of racks and the silverware basket in the door. Can't tell without seeing of course.

This was the day of Kitchenaid Dishwashers. It went from the time they introduced in home dishwashers until around the early 70's. They always made a very heavily well built machine that was like a tank and it cleaned quite well, if properly loaded. It did require at least a little care not...

Does anyone have a Wheilpool washer and dryer from 1952?

WOW!!! I am glad you told me that. Now that you said that, I do vaguely remember a red looking agitator like that. I am really surprised about that. I guess they came up with the "wavy" agitator associated with "Whirlpool" a little later. Thank you, I am happy to be educated on that. Being...

    Good DW to have?

If you thought it was a good cleaner it must have been because you pre rinsed everything. I never noticed any problem with drying and I am almost positive that it had a forced air dry too. I know the Maytag RR I bought a year later to replace it certainly did.

Does anyone have a Wheilpool washer and dryer from 1952?

Yes, I'm aware of Kenmore having roto swirl agitators. Wasn't aware that Whirlpool had straight vane agitators on their BOL early machines. I know they ALWAYS had the wavy agitator on every washer I have ever seen of the old BD machines and I question whether that straight vane agitator was...
