What was the outer tub in these made of? Stainless, enamel, or just plastic?

Presumably this is part of the Unimatic series? Vertical agitation? How does the machine actually propel the agitator? I might guess at a motor driving a cam continuously, with a second motor for the spin? I know absolutely nothing about these, except that I think they look nice.

What makes the tub clean cycle different to wash cycles? I've never encountered a machine with such a thing... is it the one and only way to get a decent amount of heat?

One wonders what the competitors are? Brand B looks like a GE, Brand C a Maytag? Not sure what Brand A is - the only thing I can think of is Whirlpool, but then given WP made the Kenmore too, I'm not sure they'd appreciate Sears advertising against them!

Sounds like a machine that should have been rejected. There's no excuse for leaving fit-and-finish work to the customer.
