    Balky TV Remote....

Does proximity of the remote change it's functional reliability? Hold the remote right at the sensor on the TV, this will determine if you are dealing with a low signal to noise issue or a non functioning sensor in the TV.

    Vintage gravity toaster

Fix the Sunbeam!! They are the perfect toaster assuming you don't need wide slots for bagels etc. The radiant control makes for the most consistent toasting batch after batch no matter if the appliance is hot or not (or the bread cold). I've been using the same one (made in 1955) for about 20...

    Gas or electric dryer?

Gas heated dryers are noticeably faster too. Can't fathom choosing an electric dryer if you have natural gas to the home.

Nice overview of the 240v US electrical system

Ran across this video today. Decent overview of how things work. This channel has other really well made videos also. He did quite an involved episode on the Toastmaster toaster that is worth a look too.

washing machine fill hoses - TC5

A larger internal hose diameter has more surface area to have pressure against it. For a given wall thickness a smaller diameter will have a higher burst pressure. The stainless braid on the outside sure looks pretty, but it likely does nearly nothing to make the hose more burst resistant. Best...

Laundry detergent for hand washing clothes

A short soak and rinse in any detergent will do just fine as far as killing anything on the mask. I'd use whatever you have on hand. I hand wash my hats all the time with powdered Tide a tablespoonful in a small bucket of hot water, works amazingly well.

    A Secret Love on Netflix

This is one of the most touching documentaries I've ever seen, if you have Netflix it is worth a look. The director spends 7 years capturing a portion of these women's lives. The wealth of historical family photos and movies add lots of depth to the story.

    Gas Stoves and Indoor Pollution

After a few hundred thousand years of man cooking over fire one would think we have further evolved by now. But we are creatures of habit I suppose. I can't imagine having a gas stove in a home, especially a modern home that is tight and no longer has the constant ventilation of a standing flu...

    Lady Kenmore Solid State Dryer

The point of the 4th wire is that a safety ground wire should never carry circuit current unless there is a fault. But indeed the ground and neutral are bonded in the service entrance panel so the chassis of the appliance should never be far from ground potential. That is UNLESS the neutral...

    Butter

Kwik Trip Milk I have been religiously buying my milk at Kwik Trip in the 1/2 Gallon bags. I'm not sure if it is due to the bag or the quality of the milk or ultra-pasteurization but it lasts and lasts. I don't go through a lot of milk so the typical half gallon jug has gone off for me when I...

    New Toploaders vs Front Loaders

I can't fathom why anyone would choose a modern high efficiency wash plate design top loader over a front load machine. These machines are only an attempt to more or less turn a front loader on it's back to placate American users that are so inflexible that they can't adapt to putting laundry...

Garbage disposals, do you clean yours, if so how?

I bought a 2nd splash guard from my disposer and I swap in the clean one and run the other in the dishwasher on every cycle, most odors seem to come from a dirty splash guard. I'd immediately replace a disposer that didn't have a removable guard. I've never seen a Badger that didn't smell due to...

hydraulic type Automatic Calrod parts & repairs

I still ponder the thought of creating an electronic control to replace these older sense a temp controls that are made of 'unobtanium' today. It might not be stock, but I agree with John that I'd rather have the control work.

Anyone playing around with Sous-Vide during #lockdownamerica?

Jon, I have that same Anova "aquarium heater" that I bought a few years back. I have only used it on proteins myself (fish, chicken and pork). I had no issues with encapsulating the food in zip lock bags with the water displacement method. I suppose a bag full of carrots has a lot more voids...

    question on dishwasher detergent?

I had pretty significant frothing with Finish Powerball tabs, I have half a box I will no longer use. It seemed a little better if I popped the red Powerball out, I assume this is a rinse agent. I use a Tablespoon or so of gel/powder for the first wash (any detergent will work no matter how...

    Power Clean?

It is amazing how well detergents work today, especially in these older dishwashers that move a lot of water. Having had the same machine through the experience of the removal of phosphates from detergents to today's formulations it is clear that current detergents just work. I never have...

    Water softeners

Be sure to do a good water test to know what you are up against initially. My water is 22 grain with only a trace of iron so a standard softener does fine by me. I wouldn't consider not having one. The name brand softeners like Kinetico are indeed extremely nice. I looked into buying a Kinetico...

    Oil Lamp soot issue

They all smoke, one smokes more ;) There is a difference somewhere that cause the deposit on the one. Either the wick or the airflow differs somehow assuming they are burning the same oil. I like collecting cold blast kerosene lanterns, but I will ONLY ever burn them outdoors. I won't light a...

*Sob, Sob* My Last Windows 7 Update

I recently upgraded two Win 7 machines here at work because an update to our ERP software mandated the OS upgrade. My workstation computer has been running Win 10 for a while now. At first I thought I was going to have to buy a license for each machine but an IT buddy suggested I try the Win 10...
