I've been looking through some of my old magazines again, and I thought you might like to see . . .

It's all a pack of LIES, I tell ya!

Here's an ad from 1970 that touts the 'carefree comfort' of the Total Electric House ". . . where everything's electric, including the heat." They tell people that it's "Odorless. Quiet. A fresh new sensation of warmth from floor to ceiling." "Learn what a genuine bargain flameless electric...

Can someone give advice on pleating?

I'm restoring my Seeburg Home Stereo Console, and the speaker grille cloth is bad. I've found some new material that's very similar to the original, and now my mother's trying to pleat it just like Seeburg did (see brochure picture below). The problem is keeping the creases straight from top to...

I hate it when my rubber gets dried out and cracks. Any suggestions?

I have a 1960s Jet Spray Cooler beverage dispenser, and it has a red rubber gasket that goes around the 'Cooling Tower' inside the bowl. I'm searching around, but I'm not sure that I can get new replacements for the gasket. I got one about 10 years ago, but wouldn't you know the 50-year old...

What do people do all day? (with apologies to Richard Scarry)

I've been considering starting a new Photo Thread (and I guess I've just done it). Recently, a few AW.org members have posted pictures of themselves and their workplaces, and I thought it might be interesting to post pictures of our workplaces, and of what we do all day <br The few pictures of...

Perhaps the old 'Point' ain't as 'Hot' as it used to be . . .

An age-old problem, discussed in Ladies' Home Journal for August, 1936. Still as true today as it was 71 years ago. -kevin

Avoiding Scurvy the Delicious Way! Way OT.

It all starts with limes. Don't worry if they're ugly -- that makes them easier to squeeze. Easy to squeeze is good.

    A Dream Kitchen, 1936-style.

I was leafing through the April 4, 1936 number of Collier's magazine (I really do need to catch up on my reading one of these days!), and I came across this. Aaaah! So modern. So beautiful. -kevin

It's raining tonight, so I'm spending the evening inside.

A friend once defined 'draught' as 'a continuing stretch of nice weather.' We've pretty much been having a draught here for the last month and more, but it's raining now. For the first time in quite a while, I'm not spending the evening out on the deck with the dogs. I decided to cheer the...

OT: I've posted some pictures of my organ here!

CAUTION: If you're MATURE and you don't appreciate cheap 'Organ' jokes, turn back now! What with the long weekend and all, I got to thinking that my roommate and I really haven't been paying enough attention to or organs lately. When you've lived together for a while, when you've reached a...

Need suggestions -- Dishwashers just not washing.

Hi! I've lurked around here for a while now, and I check out the Picture of the Day every day, but I only just got around to signing up. I've got a problem which showed up in both of my Kitchen-Aid dishwashers at the same time, and I'm hoping someone here can help me solve it. Background:I...
