    Mattresses aargh

We've been happy sleepers (though not particularly happy fu%%ers LOL) on memory foam in Detroit (we can get a King bed-in-a-box up the stairs, which is the primary limitation with this house).    Out in California, though, we found that we did -not- like the California King size (longer and...

VMW banging while entering spin--smooths out subsequent

Have an Amana VMW about 5 years old.  When doing a heavy mixed load (king sheets and bath towels with a few pair of underwear/socks), I get a few bangs (up to about 30 seconds) while entering spin before everything smooths out and the cycle continues.   My 15 year old Kenmore DD in...

    adding paraffin to boiled laundry

Curious if anyone knows--the use of nap(h)tha incorporated in soap is a pretty well known laundry aid (Fels Naptha, P&G White Naphtha soap).  Looking at some old ads saw an interesting one for Parowax (Standard Oil's white blocks of paraffin) that suggested shaving some (maybe a tablespoon or...

First experience with a cheap washer/dryer in an apartment

In Vancouver, the hotel we're in has a (likely) inexpensive Danby washer/dryer in a closet. Just tried it on 5 long sleeve shirts and a king pillow case.  Appeared to be a water condenser system.  The Heavy Duty auto cycle showed up as 4:27 (lots of other options didn't seem to have a wash into...

    Success! Maytag Performa dryer saved

A friend relies on me for appliance repair and moral support---we've replaced her disposer, etc etc. So when she said "the dryer's rumbling, will you help me have a look" I replied "sure". Maytag Performa from about 24 years ago, so likely the Norge design. She'd replaced the washer a couple...

    interesting Canadian ad 1963

Washing machine manufacturer doesn't look familiar...the agitator shown on the washer lid looks vaguely Easy...any ideas? (This site has some interesting early 60s ads from both Canada and the US. https://media.dlib.indiana.edu/media_objects/b8516845k

Are refrigerator defrost timers universal, these days?

We've got a very small (14 sqft) 40 year old Kenmore (WP built) refrigerator/freezer in a condo we own. It was provided at the time the condo was built (as was the stove which is also in place). Looks like the fan was replaced about 20 years ago, but am noticing that the defrost timer is...

Some interesting Brazil ads from 1960

Been glancing through Archive.org and found this magazine with some interesting appliance ads for Brazil 1960. https://archive.org/details/CurveloNotciasN.15-1962/curvelo_noticias_n_015_12_1962_high/page/n27/mode/1up

    Laundry a la Bretagne

We're 1/3 of the way through a 3 week Europe trip, and checked into an Air BNB in Manchester, and were shown to the laundry room, where I got caught up. How fun! Two each 8 kg Bosch washers and heat pump dryers...bought some Ariel pacs at the Co-op....and the admonishment to not confuse the...

What was the initial enzyme in enzyme detergent

Was leafing through Better Homes and Gardens from 1970 (finding a recipe for a 1969-themed picnic) and came across multiple ads for the (then new) enzyme laundry detergents. Just curious--what was the first actual enzyme? Protease?

Check out your washer hoses, folks

Was going to be gone for several weeks, so turned off the faucets to the washing machine where I noticed the hot water hose was blistered and had some turgid bubbles in the outer skin (these were black vinyl/rubber, not woven-metal clad). Interestingly, when I took them off, they each had...

Monarch and Beauty Queen Wringer Washers

This is an interesting relic--a catalogue from a home furnishings distributor in Huntington, WV. Noticed a full line of Monarch wringer washers (including one using a unicouple...had never seen that before) in the 1957 catalogue (from Findlay, OH) and a full line of Beauty Queen wringer washers...

Fixing old Maytag dryer (1980 vintage)

A friend's asked for some help. He's got a 1980 vintage dryer (gas stream-of-heat with the lint filter at 7:00, smooth woodgrain backsplash). Fairly high-end model (automatic dry control on timer, pushbutton extended tumble, etc). Complaint is the timer's stopped moving and clothes are damp...

    Stain removal: old linens

Have recently uncovered a stash of embroidered/cutwork old linens (dresser scarves, placemats, an apron worn by my great great grandmother in 1910) which have stains on them--brownish-black stains of maybe 1/4 inch diameter scattered around. They actually look slightly like a rust stain...

Cycle design on VMW (Amana mid-level)

Trying to figure out the cycle parameters of this 4 year old VMW. Has the detented dial with bulky, HD, regular, delicate and casuals. 5 temperatures; and water level switch with deep wash/spray rinse, deep wash/2 rinse, sensor wash/spray rinse, sensor wash/2 rinse. I use a DD in Michigan...

Interesting website with old Better Homes and Gardens

Found an archive of old BH&G. Have never seen this Philco cooking set from 1959...a foreshadowing of the Flair! https://archive.org/details/betterhomesgarde37jandesm/page/n547/mode/2up

    Replaced lid switch--Kenmore

Rather pleased with myself--replaced the lid switch on the DD which we inherited when we moved in. Old switch broke (you could trick it by banging on the lid) but I'd never had a DD apart...they really are cleverly designed. Date on the switch was 2006...a little rust on the lip near the bleach...
