Update on my Maytags + what’s next

My plans to replace the failing (transmission) A506 with a 512 did not work out, and I have left the family house in MA where the machines were located. The now 50-year-old 107 is still running like a top, though. Got them both (and my Elux vacs — my other favorite thing) moved into storage for...

Almost 40-year-old Maytag A506 “slowing down…” keep repairing or time to retire?

I have felt my 1985 A506 beginning to slow down for a little while now. I changed the belts last year, and just very recently, thanks to Eugene at Lorain with his virtual service calls, tipped it upside down to get the oil into the transmission to help it agitate better. This seemed to work, but...

Which decade was Maytag’s very finest?

    50s? 60s? 70s? 80s? 90s? Or other?

Another summer in the books with my beautiful old girls

Leaving the family home in Massachusetts (where I live in the summer and part-time otherwise), and where my 2 Maytags are; tomorrow I head back to Virginia for the fall. Will miss washing with these beauties, but looking forward to doing it again. 1975 A107 and 1985 A506.

    Maytags and “Maytags”/Whirltags

First picture is my 2 real Maytag washers: A107 and A506 from 1975 and 1985 respectively. Second is the phony Whirltag stackable unit at my dad’s house. “Whirlpool took the long-celebrated Maytag name, for decades synonymous with pure quality, and began producing absolutely atrocious laundry...

How hard is it to replace a noisy Maytag tub bearing?

When one of my machines spins, it sounds like a freight train and I'm told that's probably due to the bearings. My local Maytag guy thinks it's "too old," but I absolutely refuse to get rid of it no matter what happens. How complicated would it be to do myself or have someone handy who I know do it?

Did most Maytag generations look older than they were? If so, what years/decades did they fit more?

I have noticed a lot of variation in exactly how old people online seem to think old 'Tags are before they look up the serial #. For example, even though the "New Generation" center dial models were made mostly in the 70s, most people's first guess seems to be 60s (they were introduced in 66)...

    Maytag A107 timer getting sluggish

While washing a load of dish towels in my 1975 A107 today, I noticed that the timer seems to be having a little trouble advancing. Do I need a new timer motor, or can this be remedied by lubing it up a bit?

Both of my Maytags washing - A107 and A506

Washing loads in both machines at the same time. Enjoy!

In your opinion, when was the true beginning of the end for Maytag?

I’ve heard they started using slightly cheaper parts in the early 80s when they switched from the center-dial to the dark panel, but those were still really good machines. I guess a bigger change was the switch from the helical Pitman transmission to the orbital one in 89. Even though the buyout...

Two Maytags are better than one!

My 1985 A506 now has a new companion/roommate in the form of my recently-acquired 1975 A107. I’ve yet to hook up the 107 as it did not come with hot/cold hoses. But as soon as I have those, I will hook them both up to double valves together. And in case you were wondering, sadly, the matching...

    What do you think?

Am I the only one who feels like I’m going to have a seizure from watching an orbital Maytag?

Compared to an older helical one. Especially an early orbital one with the turquoise agitator like the helicals had. That bright color and fast movements. The helicals were so much gentler, quieter, and more soothing.

Buying a 1975 Maytag A107 (my dream machine, just like my grandparents' old one)

I will soon be the proud owner of 2 Maytags (I already have a 1985 A506). I've been wanting the A107 for quite awhile as it's the one my grandparents had for decades and finally gave up the ghost a few months ago. Unfortunately, by the time I learned about that, it was too late for me to call it...

When were the "MAYTAG AUTOMATIC WASHER" ID tags discontinued (center-dial models)?

My grandparents' old 1975 A107 had that tag, but it seems that any slightly newer ones of that era just had the regular tags that didn't say that. The tag was on the back of the machine (it also had a faded one in the normal upper right corner of below the tub lid).

Would my Maytag A506 be classified as a BOL model or mid-range?

From 1985. Single-speed fabric-matic, large capacity, lacks bleach dispenser (that was the only difference between the 506 and 512). I'd say it's pretty much midrange, maybe slightly towards bottom of line. Definitely higher up than my grandparents' old A107 (only one model above BOL).

1966-80 Maytag Center-Dials: do they look more 60s or 70s?

I've always thought they look 70s, hence why they were introduced later in the 60s and phased out at the beginning of the 80s. But it seems that many people advertising them for sale who don't know the exact date they were built advertise them as 60s, and some people who I've showed them to...

Single-speed Center-dial Maytags: "AUTOMATIC" filler or cycle buttons?

So, it seems many people didn't particularly care for the "AUTOMATIC" blank button on the lower-end, single-speed late 60s/70s/early 1980 center-dial 'Tags, where the speed buttons would be on a 2-speed model. Like the A10X and A308 have the blank, where as the A40X has the cycle buttons there...
