How to get the door off a 1941 GE Fridge

some penetrating oil and a crowbar...... and it opened just like magic--the latch had some corrosion that prevented it from sliding back and forth--after a good dose of penetrating oil it worked like new.

How to get the door off a 1941 GE Fridge

Hey everybody after moving my refrigerator across the floor of my garage, the door to my 1941 GE Fridge (Model B-7) now is stuck--probably something with the latch but no matter what I do, I can't unlatch the fridge. I thought I'd remove the door by removing the hinge but it's one long piece of...

    Postum Problems

I recall Postum is still sold I seem to recall Postum being offered for sale in the Vermont Country store--amazing place. It's a little pricey but we're worth it. I also loved those ghirabaldi current cookie slabs. those were the bees knees.

A good repairman is hard to find--or is he?

Sometimes I feel I'm in the middle of nowhere when it comes to these things. Does anyone know of a good "mom and pop" appliance repair guy that services vintage gas stoves. It seems like they're a dying breed; however, with the interest in buying vintage appliances I'm wondering if there are...

Dishwasher advice for Sarah's mid-century kitchen

KA Gravity drain My 1945 house had the Hobart combo sink/dishwasher. Now I know why the drain pipe was so low to the floor. Had to almost cut the entire back of the sink cabinet out to get under the plumbing to fix floor damage.

    Z-Line Dishwashers made in Ohio

I'm renovating my kitchen and I'm buying an 18 inch dishwasher. I've heard that the ZLine brand, made in Ohio, is better than Bosch. Anybody else have any experience with "the Porsche of dishwashers?" I was a little miffed when I found some stores that sell it don't do haul away or...

I'm installing a vintage O'Keefe and Merritt in my kitchen and was wondering if anybody knew of any safety covers for sale to keep pets and family members from turning the burner or oven on.

    Let's see YOUR Vintage Refrigerator!

GE Artistry I had repainted this (was black) for my kitchen remodel as a backup in case the Philco (posted above) restoration didn't work. As much as I want to keep it, I just don't have the room in my garage so it's going to the ReStore.

    Range Picture thread

Frigidaire RV-92 stovetop and pink GE oven I can only vent through one wall so a full stove unit wasn't possible next to the doorway to the kitchen; a separate cooktop and oven was the answer.

Acceptable wiring for a vintage fridge

Hi guys. I'm about to change out the power cord on my 47 Philco and I ran across a discussion of a guy restoring his 1950 Coldspot. In the diagrams he has he is using wire nuts instead of going directly into the relay box. I thought it odd but that it probably made sense since I wanted to use...

Where to put the ground wire

Hi everyone I'm about to detail my Philco before painting the outside and the first order is to replace the old two-prong power cord to a three prong. Only trouble is that Im not sure which is the best place to put the ground. Is it appropriate to use the screw that holds the power cord to...

    What is your dream refrigerator!

Love the GE Wall hung fridge I always liked GE's wall mount fridge--probably was a bear to repair but I liked that the fridge freed up the floorspace. You could probably install a pair of wall ovens right below it since the counter space was lower under those fridges.

replacing a two prong plug with a grounded plug

Hello I've been searching everywhere for the instructions on replacing a vintage refrigerator's power cord. When you replace a former two prong cord with a new grounded cord, where do you attach the ground wire.

    RV-92 Fold-Ups Rewiring

Hi everybody--Happy March 1 I have two RV-92s--one I'm going to use in the kitchen and the other for spare parts. My issue is rewiring. I was able to figure out how to take the cabinet apart to work on the wires--real mess, there's alot of gunk in there. The issue is the wiring. I'm using...

    1960 frigidaire flair rotisserie help!

Rotisserie should be the same for 40 and 30 inch ranges I had a Flair with a rotisserie unit. According to the booklet I believe the unit could be used in either the 30 inch or the 40 inch as the 40 inch's oven--the side the rotisserie unit sits would be near the size of the 30.

1941 GE has strong smell after moving

Compressor Tag confirms..... It's SO2. In conversation with Antique Appliances, they quoted me $3800 to restore it not including shipping. That's soooo expensive, but the work looks great. I think I'm going to put that one on the backburner and repaint my Philco.

1941 GE has strong smell after moving

On closer examination...... It appears to be the classic stabbing of frost in the freezer compartment. It's only present in that portion of the fridge and it's a weak smell. Enough to smell but not enough to burn eyes. I was washing with water, baking soda, magic eraser--no chemical burns or...

1941 GE has strong smell after moving

It's in the garage to be worked on Thanks Travis--it's in the garage and I was going to start working on it since the cord needed to be replaced. The usual bondo and pounding of dents. It wasn't an overpowering smell as I was able to clean it. I believe it may be just about gone since the...

1941 GE has strong smell after moving

Hello. I just purchased and moved a 1941 GE fridge. After moving it and placing down I sensed a strong chemical ( refrigerant?) smell when I was cleaning. When the door is closed it's stronger when I open it. I know to wait at least an hour (I wait a day) to have the contents settle but is...
