This week I noticed that Costco is selling the 1-1/4 HP version of the Titan waste disposer for just $79.99 ($99.99 minus a $20 instant rebate). This unit is basically the same as the 3/4 HP Titan I got from Costco last year, for $69, but with more power. It also comes with the "Silver Guard" circular magnets that are supposed to prevent metal objects from accidentally falling into the disposer. In truth, it only will work for ferritic, magnetic metal, and 18-8 or 18-10 flatware probably won't be attracted to the magnets. But it's a nice gesture.).
The 3/4 HP unit used to come with a free coupon ($1 shipping) for the "Mr. Scrappy" disposer tool. I was dubious at first but the tool is pretty much indipensible for directing food bits down the drain without hooking the baffle and pulling it up out of position. The 1-1/4 model substitutes the Sivler Guard magnet for the tool, but I'd rather have the tool. One can purchase a kit for $20 from Costco which includes the tool, the magnet, and a special brush, shipping included. The tool itself goes for about $5.99 to $7.99 from other online sources, shipping may be extra.
The one drawback to these in-store units is the relatively flimsy sink flange, which on my 3/4 HP unit is a thin sheet of stainless over a thicker plastic flange. The think stainless sheet tends to dent too easily. I don't know if the upgraded sink flange/stopper options offered with the Costco online 1-1/4 HP unit are any more dent resistant. But although my 3/4 HP unit's sink flange has a few dents, it hasn't leaked.
There is a kit available at OSH (Sears/KMart owned) that is supposed to adapt a 3 point Waste King sink flange to a Titan/Anaheim disposer. I kept the much sturdier Waste King sink flange from my previous unit, and may get the adapter if I install a 1-1/4 HP Titan in my second kitchen. But as I recall, the adapter isn't cheap: about $35. That's a lot when you consider the entire disposer cost $80.
