Dan,
Thanks for posting this, it was interesting. My paternal grandma still made Lye soap when I was a kid in the 50’s and early 60’s. It was brown and she used it for house cleaning. There’s a family story about how my Dad was burned by lye when he was a toddler. At the time grandma used to keep the lye in a empty Bakers Coconut can and my Dad loved coconut and somehow got a hold the the Bakers can that had the lye in it and got a small amount of it on his skin before grandma caught him and got the can away from him before he was injured more severely.

My maternal grandma had a gasoline powered Maytag Wringer washer in the 20’s and early 30’s before they moved to California from Kansas and she used to do the laundry outside in front of the house, boiling the wash water in a kettle over a fire.

Neat video

Thanks for posting Dan, has anyone here ever made their own soap? I always wanted to try. I've got a lot of good ashes from the fireplace this time of year and I always have a lot of old cooking fat around before it gets recycled.

I may have to try this sometime, let me know if anybody has any experience doing this.
