Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Fountain of Optimism indeed!

You can tell by the text this seller is targeting the collector market. Hollywood might pay 2 grand for period props...and they wouldn't need to work. The upside is that occasional asking prices like this may make people more aware of old appliances they have, get more into circulation and save a few from the dump.

They are beautiful, though!

Holy freaking cow! They must have CONSUMED the Fountain of Opitmism.

For two grand they'd better deliver it to Minnesota personally. In tuxedos. And then they'd have to stay for a month and act as my personal valets. Then, MAYBE I'd consider it.

This IS my favorite era for Maytag.....

Are they optomistly serious, or seriously optomistic?!!

That is alot of money for anything. I would still have to repair it for it to funtion, so everyone could play with it. I have taken out my crystal ball,.......... and I see a relist for 1800 in your future. I have always loved these. Kind of first episode Bewitched kind of Maytags. Love the sound of the timers on these with the Halo of heat dryer.Love the lighed contols. Gonna one have one someday, hopefully in Pink.

More "Antiques Roadshow" viewers....

I used to dabble in antiques, but I got out when that show began convincing everybody in America that their used dental floss and old margarine tubs were worth a fortune, or would be if they held onto them long enough.

It got to the point that you couldn't buy things at a price that would permit resale at a reasonable profit, at least not on a regular enough basis to sustain a real business (antique mall owners make much more on space rental than their vendors do on antiques, lemme tell ya!). eBay's doing the same thing to people- they see a perfectly restored 1964-1/2 Mustang convertible with all the options and matching serial numbers go for $45,000, and they figure their 1966 coupe with the six-cylinder engine, major rust, and a bunch of aftermarket crap should go for $44,000- after all, they're allowing a WHOLE GRAND for repairs.

It isn't every day that a matched pink Maytag pair of this vintage turns up. It isn't every day they sit there unbid, either.

And they will drown in the Fountain of Optimism if they don't lower that price, especially considering the number of scratches and cosmetic flaws this set has. While pink Maytags are nice regardless, "Pristine" isn't a word I would use to describe these particular machines.

Maybe they mean $2000 AFTER they find a painting professional to match that pink exactly, strip and re-spray these babies to original standards, and replace all the paper tags with exact duplicates.

Ya think? ;-)

DING DING DING

bretsomers gets the prize!

No pictures of the tub and agitator. Probably because the white porcelain tub is worn away to black and the agitator, if intact, is white from over-bleaching and hard water.

The picture is one I pulled off ebay a while back - trying to sell a Gray Ghost wringer as an antique "in good condition for it's age"!

I spit in the seller's direction!

Oh yes I do remember Fingerhut Greg! They were headquartered in suburban Minneapolis. A boyfriend of mine worked there, taking photos for the catalogs.

Yes, I did pay way too much for a few items there back in the day when I didn't have a lot of other choices. It was sturdy, brand name stuff though.

I paid $300.00 for my 1958 set unrestored and thought that was too much.... I had these repainted anyway, but at least mine did not have a huge scratch across the front on each one.

This is my pink set - I bought the DE750 pink dryer and A700 washer which I rebuilt with my 160 pushbutton panel. I paid $35 for the 160 washer and $300 for the pink set. Granted, I still need to paint the cabinets which will cost a little jack, but I'll still be well under $2000!

Another great deal from "EROOK"That seller must have ? for brains---$2000 for a WD set that REALLY doesn't work as intended-"Dryer works but runs hot","Washer fills-but won't drain"For that 2 grand they had better well WORK before I would even consider buying them for that price. Is there an extra charge for what looks like a big scratch on the front of the dryer?-or is it free? That seller needs to fill the washer and soak his head in it!
