Esso oil burner, this is one of my other hobbies, vintage heating equipment, this was used on the water heater at the Broyhill house from 1940 until 1952, then one of my cousins put it on his boiler and used it up into the 80s, I rescued it, it burns very clean and so quiet you cant believe it, Esso, made by the Gilbert and Barker manufacturing company.

RE Beckett

I have worked on bunches of them, they are ok but I never liked the 3450 Flame Retention burners they are much more sensitive to adjustment, and the old burners are quieter. One of the quietest is the American Standard Arco Flame and the Sundstrand burner., the claims that the new burners burn more efficiently are not true, if properly adjusted their is not a dimes worth of difference.

I hate to work on them, but can replace a burner nozzel quick. All I know, is with this record cold winter, my 2 330 gallon oil tanks register on empty now and 500 gallons usually fills them every fall. This has never happened in the 20 years I have lived here. And we never had 3 foot snowbanks left the middle of April and such cold temperatures. I dont think this is global warming, the climate is changing but not in my favor here.

I dont believe

Totally in global warming,,LOL, we had some 0 weather here this year and that is rare for NC!!!The real secret in getting good results with the new burners is to set them up with instruments, you need to  get a true 0 smoke reading, the older units can be set by eye ,all except the Iron Firemen from the 60s, you CAN NOT set them any way but with instruments.

tangentially...

Hate to jump on your belly and bust your balloon, but 'global warming' doesn't mean everything gets hotter. It means there is more energy in the atmosphere. Energy in the atmosphere is what makes weather, both hot AND cold. So yeah, afraid that 'global warming' can make spectacularly colder winters.

Do I believe it's 100% manmade? Unsure (agnostic). Have to 'believe' scientists have ruled out other causes like solar cycle.

Do I believe washing clothes/dishes/selves in 50F water has any bearing whatsoever on it? Not for a second. Besides, you can't "wash" grease below the temperature it solidifies unless you're using kerosene.

Do I believe electric cars can put a dent in it? Definitely not as long as electric comes from coal. Hydrogen cars? Yes; demonstrated but not ready for prime time.

Can ANYthing stop it? Sure. Roll back population to where it was in 1940. I'll be doing my part before too long.

Hi Tim,

We've had the opposite problem here this year. We're in a sub tropical zone in the southern hemisphere and usually by the end of February the Humidity and temp have settled down and the AC goes off for 9 months.

This year, it was hot and humid up until a week ago. This last week is the first since November that we haven't had the AC on and now we're finally sleeping under the duvet, albeit with the windows still open. During the day its lovely and warm still with Temps from the 25c to 30c and nights in the mid to high teens (Celcius not F)

Cheers

Nathan

We are starting to see a little switch to a little bit warmer Nathan. Wished you could send that weather this way. There is still alot of residual dirty snow left and every river and stream is almost coming over the banks with the melting. I live on a lake and this is definitely going to be one of the latest if not the latest for the ice to melt and go away. I just want to open the windows and dream of turning a/c on. I got to stop at Lowes and pick up a new oil burner nozzel as the boiler is getting loud and that is a tell tale sign this has been a bad winter.

To elaborate on what Arbilab said, global warming is pushing the west-to-east airflow further north before it comes back down over Hudson Bay to us here in the north east. Because the air has gone further north than usual, it's colder than usual when it hits us.

If I understand correctly, Quebec, the Maritimes, and the northeastern U.S. states comprise one of the few areas in the world that is supposed to get an INCREASE in precipitation. we're also supposed to get more temperature swings.

This is just my subjective opinion, but it seems like the TIMING of the seasons is changing. Compared to the first 20 or so years of my life, NOW it seems summer continues further into September, if not October. Then there's an abrupt shift to November-type weather. 'November' lasts until mid-January then all of a sudden there's a deep freeze that continues well into March. Then within 2 weeks we've got late-April weather.

Three weeks ago I was still wearing my heaviest coat. Now it's mid-April and I haven't worn anything more than a sweater for a week.....

I always assumed that since this solar system is one of many all of which are in space which is infinite, our system is moving as well as the planets and stars. The climates change slowly and rapidly depending on the position of the poles during seasons. That has nothing to do with our ozone issues but adding to the severity of the space we're in or headed for as a group of planets moons and stars. Asteroids and comets add to the severities.Anybody here think the same? It's always explained or at least made some sense to me. What about you???
