I have a 1950 Westy 40" double oven I've wanted for a long time. From origional owner but strangely has been "overhauled". Deep well has been completely remoed & replaced with a chromalox unit, need complete Westy deep well, clock knobs, oven light shields & clips, color discs for behind the surface unit switches. Have no idea why some of these parts are missing. 1950 model #AA-774, 1951 AB-774, basically the same with minor modifications. The switch to the super-fast 6" unit was replaced with a Westy factory infinite switch, has a label on back explaning this. I have a 1950 service manual & 51 suplement. The large oven won't heat but the small oven bakes supurb!!

Welcome

to the wonderful word of Westy! I've been on the hunt for parts for my Commander, as well. I have the 1952 owners manual, if you'd like copies. Alas, I've not found reliable parts service; maybe if we put our luck together something will turn up. Are the elements intact in your right oven? Todd gave me a hint about repairing Westy elements that may help. Shoot me an email.

Thanks Keith

Mine is the tol 50 & 51 model. I have the recessed oven elements, they are open coil & come out in two halves, goofey system. The coils are mounted in a pan & there are two of them. I have the 1950 service manual along with the 15 suppliment & owner's manual. Try the coconut pie, very good with or without coconut.

Manual/Automatic

Have you moved the hands of the clock for a full 12 hour period to clear any stops that may be set in automatic timing? Is the stop time set to manual? It may be an easy fix.

Thanks for the info mixfinder but that's not the problem, left oven bottom element works fine but not outer browning coil of upper unit, large oven bottom element does not heat but both upper coils work. Anyway, the small oven bakes wonderfully anyway.

Have you checked to see if there are any breaks in the coils? If there are, you can fix them by twisting the broken ends together with needle nose pliers, but there is no guarantee how long the mend will last.

On my mom's '49 Westy, during preheating only the outer coil on the broiler element lit with a dim glow. As I recall, that outer coil was also more tightly wound and perhaps thinner than the inner main broiler coils. The rest of the broiler element was not activated, just the bottom oven element. I always wondered just how much that outer broiler element was contributing to the preheating process. The oven element was doing the bulk of the work.

I know one member of this site who found someone to repair and replace the open coils in the deep well of that same stove (I shipped the stove to him) so if you isolate the problem to the coils themselves, I can probably get contact information if you would be interested in sending them out for repair.

The outer coil is always on when the bake element is on, supposed to supply balanced heat. As far as I know, almost every electirc range did this. On the newer stoves that have rod elements and only one upper element, the element gets 120 volts instead of 240 thus supplying a small amount of heat. My 41 GE has broil & speed broil, inner coil for broil & both for speed broil & is it FAST!
