Cool GE Bake-Off Winner Range

GE gave out 100 of their TOL range every year from around 1949 till the early 1970s, this one was in the hay-day of the bake-off contest, only bad thing is that the picture of the mother in law with ronald reagan would reduce the value of the range by at least $200.

Wasn't 1959 model year the first for the squared clock/timer design and windowed door?  Would make sense she'd get the very latest and best model, I wonder what she made that won the contest?

 

The story of the range is wonderful!

She sure took very good care of the range. As a general rule, with many exceptions to prove it, people from the generation that went through the Great Depression tended to take better care of things.

capillary tube or ohm sensor

Am wondering if they had moved away from the capillary tube type sensi temp system in that year, and went to the ohm sensor type sensi temp. Is that a double oven or just a warming oven on the left? Les

The story makes sense, as Reagan was still GE's public spokesperson in 1958. GE dropped him in the early 60s as he became more political, they wanted to remain politically neutral.

Les, That is a true second oven and unlike many ranges, even it was able to do clock-controlled "time bake." It baked and broiled independently of the main oven. None of my Frigidaire or Westinghouse range manuals have instructions for doing clock-controlled start and stop in the companion oven. There were less well known brands that offered that feature in the early 50s, but because Hotpoint and GE had the oven selector switches as well as thermostats for both ovens, they could give time bake in both ovens. The one exception to that is the 30" Hotpoint Hallmark range where the upper oven and surface units could be mounted on a wide lower oven instead of a base cabinet. That big lower oven was not clock-controlled. It had a selector switch with OFF, Bake & Broil settings on one side on the front and the thermostat on the other side.

I've never been able to determine if the change from round to rectangular clock occured at the model year changeover, or was a running change during the '58 model year.

thanks much for info on 2nd oven

I had no idea second oven was timer controlled also. From what I've read, that seems like a rare option. Like that idea much. This range did not sell and was relisted, so am still interested. Thanks again Tom. Is there any info on when the capillary tube sensi temp style ended, and the ohm measuring sensor began. If this is the latter type, I may bid on it. Les.

These had the hydrolic type

(capillary?) SensiTemp units, which tend to work well. Ours did.
